Great thread...a bunch of great stories about great kids!
I had something happen yesterday evening that gave me pride. I took Nick to a music store in town, my plan was to get a new guitar stand for me (a one-piece fold-up deal...the ones I've been using are two-pieces and I keep losing half of it, so I decided to K.I.S.S. the guitar stand and never worry about it again) and Nick's been talking about getting a Marching Band Snare Drum...bigger, louder, more punch, great rim-shot sound...and I agree with that idea...so I was going to surprise him and get him one. As it turned out, they don't stock them in the store and it would have to be ordered, so we passed on the deal. Ordering stuff takes 10 times longer than they say it does, and you finally end up calling them to cancel the order months after they said it would arrive, then miraculously it's there the next day...but we decided we'd only buy something from then on if we're holding it in our hands and the cashier has the price rung up on the cash register. No back orders, ever again.
We walk in, and there are 5 teenagers in there testing the floor model drum kits, both acoustic and electronic sets...they all stop and they light up when they see Nick. This one kid goes "HEY! That's the dude with BLASTULA!" They all go "YEAH! DUDE! WHASSUP!" And they all walk over to Nick and hang out with him, slap five, talk shop and welcome him to their world...Nick was cool. He hung out and talked. Then he sat down at one of the electronic kits and took off playing the living daylights out of it...everybody went over and watched him play. One of those kids' dad was there and he came over and hung out with me and asked me about Nick and how he got so good...I told him the story and also added that Nick takes lessons from a pro drummer and he practices every day for several hours...I didn't realize it, but my 15-year-old kid (16 next week) is one of the hottest drummers in town and everybody knows it...he was given a lot of respect and his attitude is quiet, softspoken and friendly to everybody. His report card was all B's and 2 C's (he missed a B in biology by one point). I quietly decided that this coming week, he'll get that marching band snare at the Percussion Center. I also decided to finish the upgrades on my computer and go ahead and record Blastula's album. I did get the guitar stand. Way to go, Nick! Life is good! WC1
