Cam Selection

Postby Doug » Fri May 05, 2006 2:31 pm

Hey all...
I am having trouble selecting a cam for my new motor.
Let me give you the rest of the combo and see everyone thinks.

SBC 406. 10:1 compression. Brodix IK-200 heads. 200cc intake volume. Weiand team G intake, Holley 750 HP. 3500 converter. 4.10 rear in a 4000Lb. car...

i drive this car on the street and reliability is a big issue so I am not sure that an aggresive solid roller is the correct choice.

I have never used a hydraulic roller and have no experience with them at all.

What do you all think.
I'm interested in your opinions.

xr276hr comp, i had one in my pontiac last year, hyd roller, great cam for me drove it every day, and it LOVED nitrous, ran a 12.13 1/4 mile with a 1.96 60' smokin the hot dogs in a 4000lb car, prolly had a deep 11 in it with traction.

I was looking at the xr294r.
Seems to fit my application really well, what do you think?

I dont know what the big deal is with comp stuff. They are way more expensive than my Howards stuff and i get custom stuff done all the time for a helluva lot less. For a 10 to1 i wouldnt go with a roller because of expense and they need extra oiling holes in the lifters so they dont starve for oil plus alot more spring pressure to keep the lifters from bouncing. 240 to 250@.050 is plenty along with a 108 seperation that will bleed off a little cylinder pressure down low. Call Robert Lou at Howards and tell him i sent you at 920 233 5228 If it was me id put in a solid and be done with it.

that's a solid roller ain't it, i have a xr280r in my 406 in the old junk chevelle, 11.8cr, motown 220 heads, seems to work really well, i always try not to over cam my stuff, when i get out my comp catalog i go straight to the bottom of the page like every one else, then i back up and think about it. how i picked the cam for mine was i used an engine sim program and averaged the power and tourqe in the range that i was wanting to make power, average power is where it's at, not the false idol of peaks, sometimes less is more. but comp has a number you can call and they'll make a recomendation based on your combo.

Sorry, I meant XR294HR..

Leon, I am looking at a hyd. roller as opposd to a solid for the reliability. This really is a street car and I don't want to have the valve covers off every week or so to set the lash.
I am also certainly not commited to Comp, I just use their grinds as a reference.
I will check with howards before I buy..

Thanks for the input.
