Craig "Whooppee" Hennige

Postby RH » Tue Aug 18, 2009 9:00 am

Drag Racer,DJ and all around good guy Craig Hennige passed away as result of a heart attack over this past weekend. Craig successfully campaigned the "Whooppee" A/G Anglia back in the 70s and 80's before hanging up his driving shoes and opening a very successful Oldies DJ service.I have known Craig since the 60s when we used to street race together up on 295 in DC.,he in his old shoebox Chevy II. Craig has always been a supporter of racing ,hot rods, rock and roll and his community. He will be sorely missed.

My condolences to his family and many friends.

RIP Whooppee.

Sorry to hear this. As an Ohio teen, I knew of this 'distant' racer via a cover shot on Super Stock or Drag Racing USA. When I came to the area in the mid 80s, I met Craig as I began to hang out and then work at MIR. Fifteen years after that, he and I both had little kids who happened to take karate together. This gave me the opportunity to talk with Craig many more times, away from the track. He was an engaging, intelligent guy who knew how to market his car (and car shows) and who always put on a great show. His local Mid Atlantic car mags/programs were pretty cool, too. My condolences to his young son, who is somewhere around Jason or Emily's age. Farewell, Whoopee Car guy. bp

Craig and I use to work at Speed Unlimited Speed Shop back in the 1980's, we worked, raced and bench raced together. How i first met Craig, my late uncle, Ray Ray had a P.O.S. vw beetle and it needed some work done, so Ray and myself went over to Craig's VW shop in Oxon Hill, Md, and "Whooppee" worked his magic on the P.O.S. That car is still in the family down in Fredericksburg, Va at my Great Aunt and Uncles. Back when Craig was working at the speed shop, he was going racing one friday nite at 75-80 dragway and had no one to help out, he asked me and i said sure. What an experince, i almost sent Whooppee threw his roof of the car coming back down the return road( going to fast and hitting all the pot holes).
RIP Whooppee.

Craig was a gifted guy that could do anything. He was also a promoter and was going to display his new funny car at Old Dominion Dragway this Sunday. There is going to be a Car Show at his wake this Thursday, Aug. 20th at the Middleton Hall in Waldorf, Md. from 3 to 8 P.M. For directions go to www.middletonhall.com or call 301-832-8100 or 301-870-1000.
R.I.P my ole friend.

Rest in peace, Craig. Sorry you are gone so soon. It seems the best always leave us and then we realize the impact they had on everyone they knew. My sympathy and prayers to Craig's friends, family and children. God Bless all. WC1
