Sir Edmund Hillary, the First to Climb Mount Everest, Is Dead at 88

Sir Edmund Hillary, the unassuming beekeeper who conquered Mount Everest to win renown as one of the 20th century's greatest adventurers, has died, New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark announced Friday. He was 88.

The NY Times did a great story on this great man. Check it out. bp

The man was a total stud. A man among men. The greatest of all modern-day adventurers. His feats made Evel Knievel (secretly) stand in awe. He was one tough hombre. He was also a global humanitarian who used his fame to help others. Knighted, and recognized by all as one who would just as soon privately donate his energy and connections to bring third-world countries up to date as to stand on the tallest peak on the planet and say "We knocked this bastard over." Rest well, Sir Hillary. You did more in your life than a thousand others would even think of trying. I hope God sends a replacement soon. WC1
