They said on the news he got the diagnosis just a few days ago.

...before Seattle had Seahawks, we wore Silver and Black with pride. The days of Lamonica, Davidson, Balintikoff, Blanda and Upshaw provided me with what remain my favorite NFL experiences. I feel Gene's battles for dignity for retired players rank at the top of his accomplishments. He battled with Honor...... 8)
