Drag Racing Story of the Day!

NHRA moto1.net Nationals Results

by Jack Durbin, motorsport.com

DINWIDDIE, Va. - Larry Dixon recorded his second-straight Top Fuel victory of the season Sunday to lead professional category winners at the Moto1.net NHRA Nationals presented by Chevrolet.

John Force, Jeg Coughlin and Randy Daniels also were winners at the $1.8 million race, the sixth of 23 events in the $45 million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.

Dixon, 33, from Indianapolis, covered the Virginia Motorsports Park quarter-mile in 4.674 seconds at 314.53 mph in his Miller Lite dragster to record his ninth career victory, just edging past Kenny Bernstein's Budweiser King dragster at the finish. Bernstein was a tick slower in his 6,000 horsepower machine, producing a 4.692 at 306.12 in his second final round appearance of the season.

"What a win," said Dixon, who defeated Jim Bailey, Doug Kalitta and Doug Herbert to advance to his 19th career final. "Let me tell you something, racing Bernstein in the final -- especially with the way he's been running -- is major-league pressure.

We were so close that I could hear him all the way down the track. At about the three-quarter mark, I just started looking for the win-light bulb. We got it and I pulled the chutes and he went flying by. I thought, 'We must have been mighty close,' and we were."

With the win, Dixon moved to second in the Winston points standings, 24 behind points leader Tony Schumacher, who lost to Bernstein in the second round.

"This is our first win over (Bernstein) in the finals and the first time in my career that we've won two races in a row," Dixon added. "The points are so tight now that if I had lost, I'd be in fourth instead of second. That's pretty close."

Force, 50, from Yorba Linda, Calif., claimed his second victory of the season and 83rd overall in a wild, tire-smoking Funny Car battle with Ron Capps. "That just shows what luck can do," said Force, who is closing in on Bob Glidden's all-time win record (85 victories). "The car was rattling me so hard in the seat that I lost my vision. When it came around all I could see was U.S. Tobacco (Capps' sponsor). I actually thought he lifted because I had crossed the centerline. But I didn't, and it turns out he was having the same trouble I was."

Force's Castrol GTX Ford Mustang lost traction at the start, veered toward the centerline and recovered at the last second to post a 5.913 at 236.01. Capps had similar traction problems in his U.S. Tobacco Chevy Camaro in the opposite lane and posted a slower 6.165 at 233.76 for his third runner-up effort of the season. "I didn't see him when I left the line, but then my tires started shaking tremendously hard," said Capps of his Don Prudhomme-owned Chevy Camaro. "I pulled up on him, and I could see his car smoke the tires, but then he started to pull away." Just as Force did from familiar first round foe Bob Gilbertson, archrival Al Hofmann and Scotty Cannon in earlier rounds. With the victory, Force moved from fourth to second in the Winston points standings, and now trails leader Jerry Toliver by 69.

"We did gain some ground on Toliver's team today," Force added. "They better get ready for Atlanta because we're going to continue to stay after it and prove what we can do."

Coughlin, 29, from Columbus, Ohio, defeated home-state favorite Jim Yates for the Pro Stock victory. Coughlin covered the distance in 6.861 at 199.73 in his Jeg's Mail Order Oldsmobile Cutlass to earn his fifth victory of the season and 15th overall, passing Yates' Splitfire/Peak Pontiac Firebird, which ran a slower 6.904 at 199.73.

Coughlin is the first Pro Stock driver to win five of the first six events since the late Lee Shepherd accomplished the feat in 1980. "Any time you're held up to guys like Lee Shepherd you know that's about as good as it gets," said Coughlin, who outran Scott Geoffrion, Bruce Allen and Kurt Johnson in the first three rounds. "Hopefully, we can win championships like (Shepherd) did."

With the victory, Coughlin inmproved his chances of earning that first Winston championship. He holds a 211 point lead over defending series champion Warren Johnson, who was upset in the first round by Rickie Smith.

"We haven't been hurt by any bad luck," Coughlin said of his winning ways this season. "We've been fortunate to make all the right calls and I've been driving pretty well. It's spectacular to have such a huge lead already, but there's still plenty of racing to do."

Daniels, from Grantsboro, N.C., held off Mike Coughlin in a thrilling side-by-side battle of Chevy S-10s for his third Pro Stock Truck victory of the season. Daniels posted a 7.497 at 179.90, to defeat Coughlin, who clocked a 7.503 at 179.37. "That was too close," said Daniels with a grin, who has advanced to four straight finals since posting a DNQ (did not qualify) at the season-opening Winternationals in Pomona, Calif. "He was a little bit ahead for a second, but then we caught up and I was thinking that if we got the lead, we'd win the race," the 31-year-old driver added. "It seemed like we crossed the finish line together. I'm starting to get used to coming to the winner's circle. At this point we've forgot all about Pomona." The next NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series event is the 20th annual Advance Auto Parts NHRA Southern Nationals, May 4-7, at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.
