Drag Racing Story of the Day!

Flying Blocks at Lions

By Wayne King

I'm sure some of you will remember Warren and Coburn on the rollers at Lions. Rick Stewart was driving the Chrysler Woody short body car (Roger fired James Warren for the weekend). Anyhow, the thing had a cracked wall. Roger knew it but they were still in the show. She blew up and one part hit Bobby Hightower in the arm and knocked him off the little stool that the starter guy sat on. He thought that someone had blindsided him. He went to the hospital.

The other parts of the side of the block flew up in the stands and hit Howard Cross, Sr., and Howard Cross, Jr. (they ran the Cross and Sons AA/FA, Fiat body, painted orange). They all went to the hospital together. Howard Sr. joked, "Roger, you don't have to throw things at me!" A sad note: Howard Sr., Jr., and the other brother Jerry all died the same year of massive heart attacks. All were good racers and very good people. Rick thought the world came to an end. They did not make a run.
