The Blue Max & Jungle Boogie
By Fred Totten
I have a good Jungle Jim story from a race we
were at in Martin, Michigan. Jungle was there, along with I think about
seven other cars. It was a night race and the air was heavy. There was
hardly a breeze blowing, and it was muggy. Jungle and The Blue Max (can’t
remember who was driving it) were the first up. We (the King Camaro) were in
line for the third pass in the first round. Jungle and The Max do their
burnout, and the smoke wouldn't go away. You could cut it with a knife.
Unknown to their crews, they had decided
between them to switch lanes after the burnout. No one on the starting line
could see them. Somewhere in backing up they made the lane change, and out
of the smoke in Jungle's lane came The Blue Max, and in The Blue Max's lane,
came Jungle. You should have seen the mad scramble by their crews to get to
the lane their car was in. People running all over the place. And the crowd
went wild. The man was a real showman and a crowd pleaser. You might outrun
him, but you couldn't beat him. I personally didn't know him that well, but
I sure knew OF him.
