LAS VEGAS -- John Force will go for his 100th career Funny Car victory
Sunday at the NHRA SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas
Motor Speedway from the No. 1 qualifying position.
Larry Dixon and Ron Krisher also will lead their respective categories
from the No. 1 position during tomorrow's 11 a.m. eliminations for the
$1.9 million race, the fourth of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA
POWERade Drag Racing Series.
Force claimed the 109th top qualifying effort of his career and third
of the season with a run of 4.831 seconds at 315.86 mph in his special
Elvis Presley-themed Castrol GTX Ford Mustang, and will face Dean Skuza in
the opening round.
With a win, Force will become the third driver in a major motorsports
series to earn more than 100 victories, joining NASCAR legends Richard
Petty (200) and David Pearson (105).
Force, who hasn't won since the season-opener in Pomona, Calif. in
February, would like to get the win behind him and can't think of a better
place to do it than Las Vegas, a place where he hasn't won since the
facility opened its doors in 2000.
"I really want to get the win, get it done, and get on with the
season," Force said.
Dixon claimed his third No. 1 qualifying effort of the season and 15th
of his career as no one improved on his 4.575 at 325.37 effort from Friday
in the Miller Lite dragster, which also features a special Elvis tribute
design.
Dixon will be going for his third victory of the season and first-ever
at Las Vegas, where he has never advanced past the second round.
"We haven't gone past second round at this track before,"
Dixon said. "It's not like we don't bring a good race car here. For
one reason or another, we haven't done well here. We've got Elvis on the
car this weekend; maybe he'll put us over the top."
Krisher earned his fourth straight top qualifying effort of the season
in Pro Stock, clocking a 6.954 at 198.23 in a Chevy Cavalier.
