Drag Racing Story of the Day!
The Chicken Choker Chronicles:
Numidia
Temporary Pole! Out Of the Groove! No Loss, No Gain!
By Len Cottrell
Numidia, PA -- We were off to a good start with the first qualifying session in the mountains of Pennsylvania. After 13 cars took their respective shots at the track, we ended up on the pole with a 5.86. Due to the threat of rain the next day, NHRA decided to have the next qualifying session at 4:00 p.m. and then have the first round of eliminations at 6:00 p.m.
We chose to sit out that session and avoid breaking anything that might take more than 90 minutes to fix. Even if we lost a few spots, we would still be on the top half of the qualifying list. As it turned out, there was a delay due to a crash and final qualifying was not run until 7:00 p.m. with much better "air" to improve performance. We were bumped three spots. Cliff Bozzelli took the pole with a 5.72. NHRA then cancelled the first round of eliminations that night.
Sunday did not rain and we drew the Horner brothers entry for our first round opponent. Tim left after Horner did and was gaining fast when at about 600' the car got "out of the groove" and started to go to the wall. Tim unfortunately, but wisely, lifted, corrected, and went after Horner again but the supercharger belt broke and we watched Horner take the win with a 5.87. Based on our ET at the 330' mark we were on a 5.74 or 5.75 run. The quickest run for the first round was Bozzelli with a 5.77. I hate it when that happens!
Points wise in the division championship, the weekend was "no loss, no gain." We are still solid in the #2 spot behind Bozzelli as # 3 car in the points, Billy Gibson, was a DNQ at this race.
Two weeks until our next adventure at Englishtown, NJ.
