At one of the Gatornationals in the early '70s, I broke the oil pump shaft in my 354" Hemi BB/A. Willie Borsch was there with his AA/FC with a 392 Hemi. I had known him for some time, and asked him if he had a shaft. He did, but it was longer, so we had to shorten it and make a new groove in it in the staging lanes. My brother and Willie worked on it while I suited up. They worked on it while we were pulling down the lanes. They dropped the mag in just in time for our round.

The guy I was to race was already running and I don't think he thought we would be ready in time. He was already backing up from his burn out when I did this John Force-type burn out. I think it caught him off guard because he fouled real bad. So if it weren't for Willie Borsch, I wouldn't have made that round.
