ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (AP) - Former series champion Tim McAmis of Hawk Point, Mo., led a quartet of Pro Modified record breakers Saturday in the conclusion of two days of qualifying for Sunday's 32nd annual IHRA Holley Spring Nationals at Rockingham Dragway.

McAmis, driving a replica 1963 Chevrolet Corvette, lowered the Rockingham track record to 6.114 seconds at 228.92 miles per hour in claiming the No. 1 qualifying position in one of the five featured pro categories.

Three other Pro Mod drivers broke the old track record of 6.205 seconds: Al Billes of Barrie, Ontario, Canada (6.143 seconds), Bob Rieger of Tampa, Fla. (6.145) and reigning Hooters IHRA Series Champion Mike Janis of Lancaster, N.Y. (6.147).

Ronnie Hood of Lenoir, N.C., got the final spot in the field at 6.328 seconds, making it the quickest 16-car field in Pro Modified history.

Top qualifiers in the other pro categories were Clay Millican of Drummonds, Tenn., at 4.861 seconds in Top Fuel; Doug Kirk at 6.537 seconds in Pro Stock; Steve Stordeur of Goshen, Ohio, at a track record 6.355 seconds in Nitro Harley and Dale Brandy of Sully, Iowa at 5.737 seconds in Funny Car.

In addition, Sunday's eliminations will crown champions in eight semi-pro categories.

Millican might have been on a record run in Top Fuel before the engine shed a supercharger drive belt at 1,000 feet, slowing the 6,000 horsepower hybrid from its usual 320 mile an hour pace to only 219.26 mph.
