There have been lots of questions on the net lately about the Mickey
Thompson Pinto funny cars I drove. All the Pintos were the same. They ran
on the one Titanium chassis. We did a photo shoot with the Mustang body on
the Titanium chassis one time, but it never ran.
I drove the Pinto on every run it ever made when owned by M/T. There
was the real ugly first dark blue body. Then we re painted it blue and
yellow. After burning it up it, we received another blue and yellow one,
which was burnt up in the final round at Indy ‘71. Harrison went to the
semis and we put him out. That is when they blew the clutch out the side
of the car. The Pinto was in primer for the last AHRA race we won that
year. For a few races at the end of the year, the car was painted a dark
blue with some ice blue scallops on them.
We then got M/T to let us do it candy red for the ‘72 season. We won
the 32-car AHRA Winternats and were runner up at the NHRA and IHRA
Winternats, which we should have won also. The last race we went to was
the only one with the dark blue Revellaser paint job. The bodies were
interchangeable. for the Mustang and Pinto. Montrelli and I only tried to
do this once. And it's a good story. This photo was the last full run it
ever made and this was the red body. It was at Niagara Falls NY, Summer
‘72. We set a new track record, beating Gene Snow.
It took me four fire suits to get through ‘71 and '72!
