Drag Racing Story of the Day!

Dixon and Bazemore Set the Pace
on Day Two of NHRA Time Trials

By NHRA Communications

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Defending NHRA POWERade Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon recorded low elapsed time and top speed Saturday at the NHRA Time Trials at Firebird Raceway as teams continue to prepare for the 2003 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.

Dixon showed no signs of letting up on last season's dominant performance as he powered his Miller Lite dragster to the finish line in 4.558 seconds at 322.73 mph on his third and final pass of the day. Dixon also recorded the best elapsed time during the first day of the test session.

"(Crew chief) Dick LaHaie has a game plan of things that he is going to try before the season-opener," said Dixon, who won nine events in a Top Fuel record 14 final round appearances. "We're further ahead now than we were last year. So far so good, but there is still a lot to learn."

Whit Bazemore had the quickest run among the Funny Car competitors after the first two days of testing. Bazemore's Matco Tools Dodge Stratus covered the distance in 4.820 at 320.89 to lead the Funny Car racers.

"We are really happy with the numbers we recorded, but we are running last years data just to learn about the new Dodge Stratus R/T bodies we have," said Bazemore. "It's quite a bit different, but we still went 320 which means we have a lot of promise there."

Craig Trebles posted impressive numbers, as the hometown favorite recorded a pass of 7.179 at 185.05 atop his Matco Tools Suzuki as the lone Pro Stock Bike competitor.

The 2003 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series begins with the 43rd annual K&N Filters Winternationals, Feb. 6-9, at Pomona Raceway in Pomona, Calif.
