HEBRON, Ohio -- Larry Dixon earned a career-best seventh Top Fuel
victory of the season while teammate Ron Capps broke a season-long drought
from the Funny Car winner's circle to give team owner Don 'The Snake'
Prudhomme a pair of NHRA trophies at the 38th annual Pontiac Excitement
Nationals at National Trail Raceway.
"What a season," said Dixon of his 10th final round
appearance of the season in 11 races. "It's more than I've ever
imagined. We've had a good start and now we need a good finish. If we are
going to win this championship we need to keep this pace going."
It was the third time that the two drivers have given Prudhomme a
double-victory celebration, including last season's event in Brainerd,
Minn. and the '98 Winternationals in Pomona, Calif.
"It's hard to win these races and what Larry is doing is
phenomenal," said Prudhomme, who had a similar season in 1976,
winning seven of eight races in Funny Car. "The chemistry that these
guys have is the best I've ever seen. It's really cool to watch. I am
happy to see Ron break out of his slump because he's had a tough season.
This was just a great weekend."
Dixon claimed his 23rd career victory in a record sixth straight final,
extending his season-long domination of the Top Fuel category. Dixon, who
increased his points lead to 259 over chief rival and second-round loser
Kenny Bernstein, clocked a 4.619 second time at 319.14 mph to oust final
round opponent Doug Herbert, whose Snap-On Tools dragster lost traction at
the start and posted a 6.278 at 163.61.
Capps drove to his 13th career Funny Car victory in a wild one,
out-running Bruce Sarver in a tire-smoking duel. Sarver's Toyota Celica
lost traction at the start just as Capps' Chevy Camaro's tires started to
spin. Capps was able to get his machine back on track and cruised to the
win.
"That was unbelievable," Capps said. "It will take me 10
minutes to tell you what happened on that run, even though the run only
lasted for five seconds. Talk about a roller coaster of emotions, I had
one on that run. When I left the line, I didn't see him and then all of a
sudden my tires broke loose and started spinning. Then my reflexes just
took over and started making me do the right things. My car quit at the
end so I coasted across the finish line. I didn't know where he was on the
track, so when I saw the win light come on I was pumped. I wanted to spin
the car around because I was so happy and would've but the car quit. This
team really needed this win."
Gary Densham remained the series leader, a single point ahead of
teammate and car owner John Force. Densham was upset by Dean Skuza in the
first round, while Force lost a second round thriller on a holeshot to
Johnny Gray.
Greg Anderson and Craig Treble also were winners at the $2 million race
in the 23 event, $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series.
Anderson scored his second Pro Stock win of the season and fourth of
his career, defeating Darrell Alderman in a classic Chevy vs. Dodge final
round. Anderson covered the distance in 6.924 at 199.05 in his Cavalier
while Alderman's Neon lost traction for an 11.094 at 79.81.
"I am going to have to build a trophy case if I keep this
up," said Anderson with a smile. "The track conditions changed
today from what we saw during qualifying and my team made the right
adjustments and my car didn't miss a beat. We started fast and finished
fast. It was a great weekend."
Jim Yates, who advanced to the semifinals, extended his points lead to
86 over Warren Johnson, who lost in the second round.
Treble claimed his third Pro Stock Motorcycle victory of the season and
fourth of his career with a run of 7.212 at 184.04 on a Suzuki, when
fellow Suzuki rider Antron Brown fouled at the start.
"Our bike was a little faster today," said Treble, who
defeated Steve Johnson, Mike Berry and top qualifier Matt Hines to advance
to the final. "I don't know what happened to those other guys, they
seemed to slow down a little. We'll take the win."
With the win, Treble cut Angelle Savoie's series lead to 36.
The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series continues with the fourth annual
Sears Craftsman Nationals, June 27-30 at Gateway International Raceway
near St. Louis.
