Drag Racing Story of the Day!

Jets, Trucks, and Bikes Dominate Moroso
During Pepsi Jet & Truck Nationals

By Angela Wall

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL - Moroso Motorsports Park was host to a variety of vehicles during the Truck & Trailer USA Pepsi Jet & Truck Nationals, April 27-28, 2002. The crowd saw action on and off the 1/4 mile drag strip as the event featured two Truck Only bracket classes, a Street Bike Shootout, the Super Pro, Pro, Pro Bike and Jr. Dragster classes, the Truck Only Show-n-Shine and the Bike Show.

The action on Moroso's 1/4 mile put up numbers over 300 in the speed department as Jet Dragster driver Ancel Horton once again proved that he was lightening fast as he took on Jim Medley in "Cannonball Express". Horton crossed the finish line first at 304.77 mph in 5.208 seconds.

Side-by-side fire breathing action also included Freddy Sibley in "Hooters" who took on Fran Peppler driving "Rock N' Roll Thunder". Female power was the name of this game as Peppler took the red light with a 5.988 E.T. at 266 mph to Sibley's 6.034 seconds at 258 mph.

Bracket Racing included a truck in the Pro winner's circle as well as in the two Truck only classes. Michael Klaben of Vero Beach took home the Pro purse in his 1978 Chevy Pickup when he ran a 12.05 at 109 mph. In the SUV/Pickup class, local racer Stephen Demonaco of Greenacres drove his 89 Chevy C1500 to a win over West Pam Beach's Spencer Baxter. But in was in the Diesel class that we saw a truly familiar name. Mike Oldham of Bob Cook Sales tried his hands on Moroso's track, and he came out victorious. He drove his 2000 Ford F350 to an eye-popping time of 16.45 seconds. That's fast for a diesel.

The Show-n-Shine portion of the event also saw hot competition with over 75 truck entries and 50 bike participants. Harley Davidson/Buell of Palm Beach sponsored the show and ended up awarding more trophies than what was originally planned. There was an awesome showing of Softails and Kawasaki's.

Moroso Motorsports Park has Test & Tune every Wednesday and Friday nights from 6pm-11pm. Any licensed driver can come out to the track and test out the asphalt that makes up Moroso's 1/4 mile. For more information please call (561) 622-1400 or visit www.MorosoMotorsportsPark.com
