Drag Racing Story of the Day!

Millican Takes Third Straight Top Fuel Win
At IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals

By Summit FastNews Network

CORDOVA, Ill. - Clay Millican continued his domination of the IHRA Top Fuel Championship with his third consecutive victory of the season at the 6th Annual Amalie Oil Nationals at Cordova Dragway Park. Other professional winners included Mike Janis in Pro Modified, Johnny Mancuso in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley, Jimmy Rector, Funny Car, and Jason Collins, Sunoco Pro Stock.

Cool, clear weather conditions led to record breaking performances at the 6th Annual Amalie Oil Nationals at Cordova Dragway Park, including new world elapsed time and speed records in Top Fuel, a elapsed time record in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley-Davidson and speed record in Pro Stock.

2001 World Champion Millican headed the field in qualifying with a 4.601/326.63 pass in the final round of qualifying Saturday night. Millican easily dispatched of Don Reed in the quarterfinals, where he backed up and established the E.T. record at 4.601 seconds, meeting 17 year-old Josh Starcher in the semi-finals. Starcher, who had earlier won his first-ever round of IHRA top fuel competition by defeating Louie Allison, fell to Millican who backed up his qualifying speed, setting a new record at 326.63 miles per hour. The 36-year old from Drummonds, TN now holds both ends of the IHRA Top Fuel record.

For the second time in as many weeks, Millican met Bruce Litton in the final, Millican taking an easy win in the Werner Enterprises dragster. Earlier, Litton defeated Roger Dean in the first round before defeating Paul Romine in the semis and setting up a return meeting with Millican in the final.

Litton smoked the tires on the launch and Millican cruised to an easy victory, his third consecutive win of the season.

"The magic just keeps going on," said a beaming Millican. "This weekend, all the credit goes to (Crew Chief) Mike Kloeber. It's unbelievable how fast the car is going down the racetrack. The race track surface is very good, but never would I have dreamed of going 326 miles per hour. That's awesome."

In Pro Modified, Mike Janis defeated Al Billes, 6.208/227.31 to 6.425/214.35. The 2001 Pro Modified champion was the man to beat all weekend, setting new track records qualifying records with a 6.137 elapsed time and a speed of 230.06. "This is an incredible weekend and we were in championship mode all day," explained Janis. "My guys worked hard and we have a little more for the rest of the season, we just didn't call on it.

"I intend to repeat as IHRA Pro Mod champion."

The Lancaster, NY engine builder won his first race of the season, and moved into championship contention. Billes leads the Pro Mod championship chase with 283 points, followed by Janis with 205.

Johnny Mancuso defeated Ray Price for the Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley-Davidson win, his first of the season.

In qualifying, current Nitro-Harley world champion Doug Vancil of Albuquerque, NM set a new IHRA E.T. record with a 6.278 pass.

"It definitely feels good to break the record, but the scary thing is that it's only going to get broken again. Probably, soon," said Vancil.

The previous record was set by 64-year old Ray Price two weeks ago at the K&N Nationals.

"The team works real well together and it finally came together. I've said all along this motorcycle is one of the most consistent out there; it's almost like a bracket bike. I always felt that if I could get past the first round, we would win.

"Doug's (Vancil's) numbers were fantastic all weekend. But in racing, it's about consistency and we were able to put it all together."

Price leads the Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley-Davidson point chase 348 to Vancil's 280.

IHRA Funny Car is rapidly becoming one of the most competitive classes in drag racing with a half dozen drivers regularly positioned for victory. The qualifying field was led by Jimmy Rector, winner of the first two events of 2002. The Ft. Oglethorpe, GA driver defeated Mike Comella on the first round and moved to the final by defeating 2001 Funny Car champ Mark Thomas. In the final, Rector defeated Dale Brand in a side by side pass, 5.827/241.24 to the losing 5.906/237.09.

The victory was Rector's third consecutive victory and he takes a commanding lead in the Funny Car championship with 346 points.

Can anybody beat Rector, he was asked in victory lane.

"Only Jimmy Rector can beat Jimmy Rector," said the 3-time winner. "I feel like we have a really good hot rod and crew. We're not going to win every race but we go into it prepared to take advantage of any opportunities we get.

"We're in really good shape but it's a long season and early to be talking championship," added Rector.

Jason Collins of Rainbow City, AL won his first ever Sunoco Race Fuels Pro Stock event defeating Doug Kirk.

"It's been an unbelievable day. We finally got a race car we can run some numbers with," said the former Top Sportsman driver. "I've been decent on the tree, but the car they are giving me makes it easier for our team to not only make rounds but take wins."

Collins also established a new IHRA world speed record of 213.54 mile per hour.

The quickest Sunoco Pro Stock field in the history of IHRA began final eliminations with the 16 car field led by Dwayne Rice's Moser Engineering Grand Am and separated by only .08 of a second.

The next event on the IHRA Hooters Drag Racing Series is the rescheduled finals of the ACDelco Nationals presented by Chevrolet at Virginia Motorsports Park, June 1. The series moves to Canada June 7-9 for the Mopar Performance Parts Nationals at Grand Bend Motorplex, Grand Bend, Ontario.
