A funny episode happened one year at The U. S. Nationals / Indy. I've
always loved fireworks and airplanes, so there were many occasions that I
used both during pre-race ceremonies at national events. It was really
impressive (when the timing worked out right) to have a low level (REAL LOW)
flyby by a warbird, right on the closing note of the national anthem --
followed by a barrage of aerial bombs the instant the plane cleared the end
of the track. Well it worked perfectly at Indy that particular year.
Too good in fact!
The airplane, a P-51 doing about 350 mph, came in so low that many of the
surrounding residents did not see it climb out at the end of the strip. When
the aerial bombs went off... Well you know what they thought. The police and
security radios got real busy, real quick. Local fire departments were
dispatched, looking for a non-existent disaster. While the fans were
enjoying the first round of Top Fuel, I was scrambling to get all this stuff
calmed down.
The authorities seemed the actually find a little humor in at all, but
I'm certain than some of the neighbors are still wondering what happened. No
harm...no foul.
