Drag Racing Story of the Day!
Bud's Coast to Coast Drag Racing
Adventure
By Bud DeBoer
I took a 40,000-mile trip in the summer of 1965 and it ended at Indy. It
was a dream job and I have to thank Jerry Baltes for suggesting it to then
Drag News owner/editor Doris Herbert. It took me about two seconds to say
"Yes" after Doris called me in her office in early April of '65
and asked me if I would be interested in it. I drove a Dodge D200 van,
outfitted for camping. It was painted by Teddy Miller of Miller &
Martinez fame from San Diego. Teddy designed the paint scheme and graphics.
It was painted a brilliant orange and yellow with a clear coat over it.
My job as Field Rep for the paper, was to visit every drag strip and speed
shop along a route that went through the Southwest, South, up the East
Coast, and back to the Midwest. I covered events, sold subscriptions, did
some announcing, and even collected some "past dues" owed the
paper. It was a lot of work, a lot of fun, and provided me with memories of
a time in my life that I will treasure always.
