Bahrain Drag Championships
Drag cars cars clawed for traction, dueling it out in a smoke-fest quite obviously bringing the huge crowd to its feet and made for some very exciting viewing at the Bahrain International Circuit on Thursday 19th May. Despite the noise and nature of the sport, Drag Racing has successfully permeated a wide cross-section of the population attracting racers and fans from all around the GCC to challenge each other on this purpose built track.
The Unstoppabulls Drag Racing Team showed their strength at the third leg of the Bahrain Drag Championship. In the pro-category Bulls racer Khalid Mohammed driving his small block 1972 Camaro thrilled the crowds with the perfect lift of both wheels as he pulled his fastest time of 7.98secs and 265.89 on the quarter mile track, breaking his own record and firmly securing third place on the podium.
Bader Ahli from the UAE won the race in his Firebird to a cheering Emirate crowd that had traveled to Bahrain to witness the show down. Ali Aryan was unable to finish the final run was in second place despite breaking his own record in his new big block 1969 Camaro.
Amer Al Khan totally dominated the Street RWD 4 & 6 cylinder category in his BMW E46 M3 with a top speed of 173kmph. Racer Ammer still holds the fastest time and best qualification times in his category leading with points in the first three races out of six thus securing the year’s championship. In second place was Luay in his Nissan 350Z.
Ahmed Al Khan successfully secured third place in the Street RWD 8 cylinder category in his red 2005 Corvette C6 with a fastest time of 11.9 seconds and a top speed of 190kmph.
Marshals and fire crew worked late into the night ensuring a safe and well organized event at the home of motorsport in the Middle East.
The FIA Drag Racing Head Carl Olson of the US distributed the prizes. A meeting on Saturday 21st May will discuss the rules and regulations of the FIA European Drag Championship and other issues including modification of drag racing rules. The commission includes also includes representatives from Germany, Australia, China, Finland, France, Britain, Norway, Sweden, Venezuela and Russia.
