SMITH LEADS NHRA PRO MOD DRAG RACING SERIES QUALIFYING ON FRIDAY
NORWALK, Ohio – Reigning world champion Rickie Smith raced to the qualifying lead Friday in the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park.
Smith powered his IDG Chevy Camaro to a top performance of 5.910 seconds at 246.26 mph. The defending event winner, who currently sits second in the points standings, is looking to repeat history at Ohio and join his son, Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion Matt Smith, in the winner’s circle this weekend. Last year the two won this event in their respective categories. The veteran North Carolina driver will lead the field into Saturday’s final qualifying session at 4 p.m. and the first round of eliminations is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Points leader Mike Janis sits second overall with a 5.910 at 245.81 in the Jan-Cen Racing Camaro, and is followed by Pete Farber in third with a performance of 5.927 at 248.20 in his CRC Brakleen ’69 Dodge Daytona . Ohio favorite Troy Coughlin, the 2012 world champion, sits in sixth with a 5.962 at 249.90 in his JEGS.com Chevy Corvette.

Qualifying will continue Saturday for Saturday’s first round of eliminations.
