The Clash of the Titans @ San Antonio Raceway, 8/29-30, 2014

By JM Hallas

Marion, TX (Aug. 29th, 2014) San Antonio Raceway played host to its 16th Annual Clash of the Titans Outlaw Racing Series. This show had everything that drag racing fan could ask for, from the most exotic high tech machines to a local street car all in action at the same place. These are some of the baddest cars on the planet featuring some of the most unique engine combinations. Want a turbo charger or two? They’ve got it. Injected, blown, and shot of nitrous? Yep. All the way to your bracket racers, some in their street driven stock power plants.

Classes included for this weekend are the high flying Pro Mods, Outlaw 10.5, True 10.5, Top Sportsman, 5.80 Index Challenge, Little Pooch Shootout and Summit Super Series Bracket Racing. Want a little nitro action? How about a grudge race between a Top Fuel Dragster and Top Fuel Funny Car. If that wasn’t enough, a Jet Funny Car will make exhibition runs.

Friday’s activities began with racer move-in, registration and tech, plus set up for all the vendors on the midway. Racers had time to test-n-tune beginning at 6:00pm, with qualifying in the Pro classes starting at 8:30.

Round 1 of Pro Mod qualifying saw Bill Doucet in his Coupe lay down the quickest time with a pass of 4.1527 @ 188.05 with Steve Wiley close behind at 4.195 @ 162.75.

The night air was great for round 2 of the Pro Mods with a dozen cars making passes. Conditions gave Wiley, in his Corvette, what he needed to blast through the 1/8 mile, tripping the beams with a 3.8691 @ 203. 80, a new track record. Gaylon Smith, in his 57 Chevy, was also able to post a sub-four second pass with his 3.9355 @ 188.05. Doucet bettered his number with 4.0191 @ 188.60.

Racing continues Saturday with time trials for the bracket cars starting at noon, and another two rounds of Pro qualifying starting at 3:00pm. Eliminations are slated to start at 7:00pm, capped off with run by the Jet Funny Car.
