YORK, PA – Super Stock magazine was introduced as a new drag racing publication in late 1964 and became an instant success. It was the heyday of Super Stock racing and the emergence of the altered wheelbase funny cars at drag strips throughout the country.
The publishers of Super Stock magazine Jim Davis and Monk Reynolds compared notes with York US 30 Dragway promoter Bill Holz and gave birth to the 1st ever Super Stock Nationals at York US 30 Dragway on August 7, 1965.
Never in their wildest imaginations did they ever dream that the race would be such an overwhelming success. Cars from all over the country converged on York US30 along with a crowd that had traffic backed up for miles and race fans coming thru the fields to attend this first ever phenomenal event that went into the wee hours of Sunday morning to complete.
The memories and the stories will unfold at the 14th Annual Musclecar Madness at the York Reunion to be held at the York Expo Center, York Fairgrounds on July 10-11th with the presentation of the 50th Anniversary of the Woodstock of Drag Racing. Jon Lundberg, the “original” announcer, and Bob Harrop, the overall winner, will be present to honor this “special occasion.”
“There will only ever be one 50th Anniversary of the Woodstock of Drag Racing,” related show promoter Darwin Doll.
Many of the original players from the largest one-day drag racing event ever presented will be in attendance to commemorate that historic event. Actual race cars that competed will likewise be on display at this once in a lifetime event,
Show hours are Friday, July 10 from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 11 from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.
A special display will be featured at the former raceway site at the York Airport in Thomasville during the show weekend. Visitors will be able to visit the site of one of the most popular drag race venues in the country. Schedules and features will be announced in future releases.
The annual event will be supporting the York County SPCA for the fourteenth consecutive year and the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs for the fourth consecutive year.
Action shifts to Beaver Springs Dragway for the presentation of the 12th Annual York Nostalgia on Sunday, July 12 with activities beginning at 8 a.m.
