2015 NHRA Englishtown Saturday Pro Mod Qualifying and First Round

NO. 1 QUALIFIER JANIS RACES TO FIRST ROUND VICTORY IN NHRA J&A SERVICE PRO MOD SERIES PORTION OF TOYOTA NHRA SUMMERNATIONALS

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. – Mike Janis claimed the No. 1 qualifying position and a first round victory Saturday during the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Toyota NHRA Summernationals.

This weekend’s Pro Mod competition at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park is co-presented by Smithfield Foods and Western Beef and is the fourth of 10 events in the season.

New York native Janis drove his supercharged Jan-Cen Racing Engines 2013 Camaro to a performance of 5.775 seconds at 250.41 mph to earn his second consecutive No. 1 qualifying position of the season and fourth of his career.

“We thought we were going to go a low-80 or so because the sun was out in the middle of the day,” Janis said. “We had no idea we were going to go a 77. I was shooting for another 79 or 80 but the 77 was definitely a bonus. Hats off to my crew, my son, everybody involved.”

Janis defeated Gerry Capano in the first round. He will have lane choice when he meets Troy Coughlin Jr. in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

Houston winner Don Walsh qualified second with a 5.799 at 254.14 in his late model Precision Turbo Camaro and outran Mike Knowles in the first round. Walsh will meet Kevin Fiscus in the quarterfinals.

Gainesville winner Bob Rahaim qualified third and raced to a first round victory over Jim Bell. Rahaim and reigning world champ Rickie Smith will meet in the quarterfinals. The other quarterfinal pairing features second-generation racer Bill Glidden against Troy Coughlin.

Pro Mod eliminations continue Sunday at approximately 12:45 p.m.
