CUTLER, STEFFEN, TABOR AND LIND HEADING TO SUMMIT NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
BOISE, Idaho – Local racer Ed Cutler led the list of winners for the NHRA Summit Racing Series Northwest Division Race of Champions at Firebird Raceway that will advance to the Summit Racing Series National Championship.
Cutler faced off with Firebird Raceway teammate Sam Northup in the Super Pro final as both drivers worked their way through the field for the chance to race for the coveted NHRA Wally trophy. The pair left the line together, but it was Cutler edging out Northup at the strip with a 9.129 second, 143.55 mph lap on the 9.12 dial. Northup made it a close race clocking in at 10.967 on his 10.95 dial.
In the Pro class, it was Robert Steffen of Bremerton Raceway facing off with another Firebird runner in Levi Burlile. Steffen took an early two-hundredths lead and ran a stellar 10.714 (10.71 dial) to force Burlile to break out with a 10.197 on his 10.2 dial.
Portland International Raceway drivers Adam Tabor and Tom Loos battled for the Sportsman title with Tabor taking the win at the start as Loos left early with a red-light foul start. Tabor ran it out to a 12.264 second, 109.79 mph pass to Loos’ 12.842 at 104.96.
Joseph Lind had a big starting line advantage over Chris Benda in the Motorcycle class which proved to be the difference. Lind covered the quarter-mile in 9.008 seconds at 139.85 mph to Benda’s 9.486 at 144.35.
The four will now advance to the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Championship where they will face off with drivers for the other six NHRA divisions at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in November during the Auto Club of Southern California NHRA Finals.
The High School trophy went to Ryan Widhalm of Renegade Raceway who outran Jacob McGarry from Woodburn Dragstrip. Widhalm went 13.287 at 99.41 to McGarry’s quicker 11.658, 112.98.
In the Summit Racing Jr. Drag Racing League it was Cooper Chun taking the win and the trophy in Jr. Thunder while Jake Jones hoisted the trophy in Jr. Lightning. Chun of Portland International Raceway defeated Alisha Miller representing Woodburn Dragstrip. Chun went 9.946 at 66.67 mph to Miller’s 9.103, 72.75. Jones out of the Rocky Mountain Raceways’ camp ended Emily Lewis’ day with a 7.948 second, 82.80 mph lap. Lewis, Pacific Raceways, crossed the line in 7.964, 81.65.
In addition to individual championships, racers were competing for the team championship with host track Firebird Raceway amassing 59 points to take home the Race of Champions Team Championship. Woodburn followed in second at 54 while Portland International Raceway held on to third with 44 points.
