ROLLINS TAKES MOSER SPORTSMAN SHOOTOUT

REYNOLDS, Ga. – John Rollins outlasted the 16-car field on Saturday to take home the win in the NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout at Silver Dollar Raceway and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.

Rollins, representing the Super Street contingent, faced off with Steve Furr and his Super Gas entry in the final round. Furr, Harrisburg, N.C., actually qualified for the specialty event in both Super Gas and Top Dragster but lost in round one to Top Dragster pilot Larry Roberts.

Rollins beat Gaines Hickman, Sherman Adcock and Robbie Shaw in his ’72 Nova to advance to the final. Furr nailed the tree with a .002 second reaction time in his ’68 Camaro for the holeshot but then was .007 second too quick at the finish as Rollins ran a .030 package for the win crossing the finish line in 7.465 seconds at 105.93 mph.

The High Springs, Fla., resident will take home $2,500 for the win with Furr collecting his share of the $15,000 posted purse.

In final qualifying for Sunday’s eliminations, it was Randy Daniels leading the Comp field at 8.834 seconds, -0.726 under the index while Mark Nowicki grabbed the top spot in Super Stock with his ’98 Avenger out of Gaylord, Mich. Charley Downing, Lester Johnson and Rob Moser round out the number one qualifiers in Stock, Davis Golf Cart Top Sportsman and Hickory Enclosed Trailers Top Dragster.

In the 11.00 Index class, Don Popham, Upotoi, Ga., is on top with a perfect 11.000-second lap in his ’85 Thunderbird.
