ORLANDO, Fl. ( March 1, 2016): The International Hot Rod Association will kick off its 2016 tour at Orlando Speed World (OSW), a first for the veteran organization, as well as many of its racers. Two time Pro Stock World Champion John Montecalvo is heading south from his home on Long Island to get his season started with the Amsoil Nitro Nationals in Orlando.
With his Sonny’s engines freshened and his RJ Race Cars Camaro readied for battle, Montecalvo is enthused about cutting his teeth on the OSW quarter-mile. “We’re looking forward to the first race. We had a great season last year. Tommy Lee (IHRA 2015 Crew Chief of the Year) has been getting the car ready. We’re looking to go out there and set the tone for the season.”
Other offseason updates also included a trailer wrap on Montecalvo’s hauler. However, the same power and crew that kept him the 2015 IHRA points championship chase will return in 2016, looking for more victories and a third World Championship.
“I’m glad to have Mike Dunn with us as the new IHRA President. We’re excited about where he’s going to take the organization, beginning with the event this weekend. I’m happy to get to Orlando and run at a facility that’s new to us and to IHRA. I’ve heard good things about the track and how Wade Rich manages it. With IHRA track prep, I know it’ll be set on kill. I’m anxious to get out there and let the clutch out.”
Montecalvo and team plan to test on Wednesday and Thursday at OSW before qualifying begins on Friday. Pro qualifying will continue on Saturday of the Amsoil Nitro Nationals before final eliminations on Sunday.
