SMITH RACES TO QUALIFYING LEAD FRIDAY DURING NHRA J&A SERVICE PRO MOD DRAG RACING SERIES ACTION IN ATLANTA
COMMERCE, Ga. – Rickie Smith powered to the qualifying lead Friday in the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing at Atlanta Dragway is co-presented by Pro Line Racing and FuelTech. This is the third of 10 Pro Mod events on the 2016 season.
Smith, a two-time NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series world champion, powered his late model IDG Chevy Camaro to a 5.781-second pass at 250.51 mph to take the qualifying lead. Smith won the season-opener in Gainesville, Fla. and posted a runner-up finish two weeks ago in Houston, where he was the No. 1 qualifier. He has six No. 1 qualifiers in his career.
Troy Coughlin raced to the No. 2 spot with a 5.806 at 253.14 in his late model JEGS Mail Order Chevy Corvette. Coughlin was the runner-up at this event one year ago.
Former Top Fuel racer Khalid alBalooshi is third in his 1968 Chevy Camaro. alBalooshi was the No. 1 qualifier at this event in 2011.
Michael Biehle is fourth, Steve Matusek is fifth and Eric Latino is sixth.
The final qualifying session for the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals will be held Saturday, May 14, at 12:45 p.m. Round one of eliminations is later on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
