SMITH POWERS TO FIRST ROUND VICTORY IN PRO MOD RACE AT ENGLISHTOWN
ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. – Rickie Smith powered to a first round victory Saturday at the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing is the fourth of 10 Pro Mod events on the 2016 season.
Smith, the No. 2 qualifier, raced his IDG 2015 Chevy Camaro to a 7.904-second pass at 118.70 mph to defeat Gerry Capano in his Split Racing ’63 Corvette. Smith, who has raced to two victories in the first three races of the season, will go up against defending world champion Troy Coughlin in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Coughlin outlasted Mike Janis in the first round.
Danny Rowe, the No. 1 qualifier, lost to No. 16 qualifier Jim Whiteley in the first round after crossing the center line. Whiteley will face Michael Biehle, who defeated Chip King, in the next round.
Steve Matusek will race Von Smith while Kahlid alBalooshi will battle Bill Glidden in the quarterfinals.
Eliminations in the NHRA J&A Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the NHRA Summernationals will continue on Sunday.
