YORK SPRINGS, PA – The rich heritage of the former York US30 Dragway will be relived in South Central Pennsylvania long recognized as the hotbed of automobile racing of all types. Recognized for renowned sprint car racing and followed closely by drag racing that began at Garden Spot Airport, in Mountville and known as Lancaster Drag-O-Way. The Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs will present the 15th Annual York reunion at their popular facility and their adjacent Latimore Valley Fairgrounds.
The York US30 Heritage Days will be presented on July 8-9th encompassing EMMR and the fairgrounds. Vehicles that competed at the popular York US30 Dragway that was located at the York Aiport in Thomasville. The “York” drag races were presented on Saturday evenings and claimed national notoriety before closing in 1979. The track attained worldwide recognition with the presentation of the first Super Stock Nationals event in 1965 and is known to this very day as the “Woodstock of Drag Racing.”
Featured at the two-day event as part if the York Nostalgia Weekend will be a presentation of Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins Day on Friday with Legion of Honor Awards at 5 p.m. recognizing ten annual recipients in a hall of fame ceremonies which will feature the induction of 97 year old Charles Hampp, Sr., for his many years of performance contributions and a reunion of Jim Kirby and Dickie Harrell’s Camaro that faced off with local funny car champion Bruce Larson of Dauphin in his USA-1 Camaro. The two cars will be side by side for the first time in 47 years. The event is the 15th consecutive York Nostalgia event to be presented in honor of the deep heritage of this world renowned dragway which is many times overlooked for the significant role it played in many lives in this country.
Racing vehicles that participated during the greatest days of drag racing will return to the area from all over this vast country to pay homage to their performance heritage enshrined in the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing.
The show supports the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. Admission to the show is $10 donation, children 12 and under free. All active military free with i.d. Show hours are Friday 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The show is the first leg of York Nostalgia Weekend with the 13th Annual York Nostalgia Nationals completing the weekend on Sunday, July 10th where many of the legendary race cars on display will compete for York Nostalgia Nationals laurels at Beaver Springs Dragway with activities beginning at 8 a.m.
