YORK SPRINGS, PA – It all started at a small airport in Lancaster County known as Garden Spot Airport in Mountville, Pennsylvania, when Bill Holz and the Lancaster Cam Jammers gave birth to drag racing in South Central Pennsylvania with a track known as Lancaster Drag-O-Way.
A neighboring chinchilla rancher forced the closer of the drag racing activities and the operation moved to Thomasville, Pennsylvania, at York airport and named the operation York US30 Drag-O-Way. Little did anyone know that this track would become one of the most famous drag racing operations in the United States.
The track closed in 1979 at the conclusion of a bad weather laden season. Every year for the past fifteen years the pilgrimage to a York US30 Reunion to pay tribute to the rich history of this world famous dragway.
The 2016 event will be held at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs, Pennsylvania. The event will host a Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins Day on Friday, July 8th and a Jere Stahl Day on Saturday, July 9th paying tribute to two of the nation’s drag racing pioneers who cut their teeth at “York.”
Momentous occasions will be presented with the annual Legion of Honor awards on Friday at 5 p.m. The Jim Kirby/Dickie Harrell Camaro will be side-by-side with the USA-1 Camaro of World Champion Bruce Larson for the first time in 47 years and the most senior recipient of the Legion of Honor award this year is 97 year old Charles Hampp, Sr.
The newly restored Grumpy’s Toy IV Camaro will be unveiled at 2:30 p.m on Friday presented by owners Vicki Bolla and Dale Carvender of Pittsburgh. The car earned national acclaim by winning the first ever NHRA Pro Stock Eliminator plus countless other honors during its tenure.
The event is the first half of York Nostalgia Weekend with the final half being presented at Beaver Springs Dragway with the presentation of the 13th Annual York Nostalgia Nationals on Sunday, July 10th with activities getting underway at 8 a.m.
