Remembering York US30 Dragway During Aviation Days

YORK, PA – The annual Aviation Days will be presented at the York Airport in Thomasville on Father’s Day weekend June 16-17th. The airport was the site of the world-famous York US30 Dragway that operated from the mid 1950’s until season end in 1979.

There will be a static display of airplanes including World War II aircraft and plane rides including a T-6 Texan, a World War II trainer. A complement of other aircraft to be displayed will be announced in the near future.

A special display commemorating York US30 Dragway that hosted many major drag racing events will be featured in a new hangar at the airport as well. Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins’ Grumpy’s Toy IV, Dale Broderick’s A/competition coupe, and Richard Hahn’s “Blue Mountain Express” top fuel dragster will be three of the eight drag racing race vehicles to be featured during this special event.

Historic photos will be on display and for sale, drag racing memorabilia and racing personalities will appear during the two-day weekend event. A popular cackling thunder start-up will be held at 3 p.m. both days and an Eastern Museum of Motor Racing display will present highlights on drag racing.

There is no admission charged for this special weekend of memories dedicated to the dragway that hosted the “Woodstock of Drag Racing” the largest one-day drag racing event to ever be held in this country.

Hours for the aviation days and dragway displays are Saturday, June 16 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, June 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
