Funny Cars: My favorite examples…

…of things that are not supposed to be what they actually were.

Anyone who sees a photo of Prudhomme’s Carefree ‘Cuda would say it was from 1973, and ninety-nine point nine percent of the time they’d be right. However, I believe the first photo I’m sending is from the final round of the New Year’s race at Irwindale, which took place
after midnight. So it’s the Carefree car on January 1st, 1974! Trivial, I know, but I love this sort of thing.

This pic shows Prudhomme losing to Ed Moore in the final round of Tucson ’82. Apart from the caption erroneously calling his Omni a Firebird, everything seems alright in this pic. However, who could forget Prudhomme destroying his Pepsi Challenger Omni at OCIR at the
end of the previous year. Zero chance that body was ever resurrected. So, what in the heck is going on in this pic? Here’s the car a few months later, looking great! Obviously was his backup shell.

The Vern Moats shot from Kansas City, summer of ’79. Who says the first Omni funny cars debuted in 1980? Lots of people. A funny aside: note the caption calls the car ‘his new Arrow.’

Finally, the first Omni fuel car (see caption) with Tom Anderson at the ’79 US Nationals.

I hope you got a kick out of some of these. I love this kind of stuff.
