The Kelly Services Night Under Fire at Summit Motorsports Park has historically been billed as the “largest one day race in America.” The 41st edition certainly lived up to that. A sellout crowd of well over 30,000 fans came to see the extravaganza. They were awed by 6 nitro funnies headlined by John Force, Robert Hight, and Jack Beckman as well as gassers, pro-mods, jet trucks, and the NDRL 7.0 pro series. New this year was the North American Jet Dragster Championship, a title fought for by 10 jets from across the country. Oh yeah, I almost forgot the $100,000 worth of fireworks to end the night. Here is what it looked like through the lens of Dave Oakes.
NDRL 7.0 pro winner Michael Sexton launches with the front wheels dancing in round 1.
Force put a holeshot on Hight in the final taking the win with a 4.04 @ 321 mph to Hight’s quicker 4.02.
Austin Prock made runs in both JFR cars. Here he gets sideways in the Auto Club Camaro.
Jack Beckman made his Night Under Fire Debut in his Infinite Hero Charger.
Larry Higginbotham nearly took out the tree but still won the pro-mod crown.
Prock also made 2 runs in the Peak Camaro.
Scotty Holdridge is the initial North American Jet Dragster Champion.
Look carefully you can see pulse rings in the jet blast from Bob Motz’s Kenworth.
Ted Turley Jr. tries to calm down the Traveler gasser after a wild burnout!
Dale Creasy Jr. ran a stout 4.07 in round 2 of funny car.
Kevin Pryor’s WJ tribute Olds took the pro-stock final over the Rod Shop Dodge.
Del Worsham lights the candles in round 1 of funny car.
After fireworks, the fans can walk on the sticky track to meet the stars. It’s fun!
