Chicken Chokers Chronicles: Final Chapter 2018

This was a season ending event at Maple Grove PA this weekend.

Last Wednesday my crew chief Chris Myers and I left VA with the truck and trailer heading to the race. We were on the PA Turnpike in heavy rain when we got to the Morgantown exit 298 which is only 10 miles to the track. As we were slowing down to take the exit ramp circle, the brake pedal went to the floor and the electric trailer brakes locked up and the trailer hydroplaned around and the trailer went up on the Jersey barrier and ripped loose from the truck and both units were totaled.

The only good news is that Chris and I both had our seat belts on were not injured. I had liability insurance for damage to others but nothing to cover my truck and trailer.

It took 4 hours and 2 large tow trucks to get the 2 units off the Turnpike and towed to the security of Maple Grove race track facility.

I want to thank our Division Director Dave Mohn for alowing us to bring the totaled units into the safety of the grounds in our time of need. I am still working on arrangements to have the 2 units removed for salvage.

Just to prove that we are die hard racers, we found that the race car remained strapped to the floor and sustained no damage so because there was only 12 cars entered and NHRA qualified the quickest 16, we decided to try to qualify at the last race of our season. Mike Burns cautiously staged the car and idled down the track to qualify # 12!

As all of our tools and parts were already repacked in another trailer and I did not want to press what little luck we had left by running the car hard for 1st round and taking any further chances, we packed up the car and focused on getting everything home.

Racing is not for sissies!
