2) Ely Reeves Callaway III, born in 1947, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at his home in Newport Beach, California, from injuries sustained after a fall. Reeves was a legendary figure in the world of high-performance automobiles. Entirely self-taught, Reeves founded the Callaway Cars in 1977 from his garage in Old Lyme, Connecticut. His first product success was an aftermarket turbo kit for BMW, which renowned automotive journalist Don Sherman reviewed favorably that year in Car and Driver. Reeves, a Formula Vee champion driver prior to becoming a constructor, moved to Old Lyme, Connecticut. His design innovations were for BMW, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Land Rover, Mazda and General Motors. Reeves is perhaps best known for his work with Corvette, The Callaway Twin Turbo Corvette “B2K” and the Twin Turbo Corvette, dubbed “The Sledgehammer.” In 1994, Reeves launched a Germany-based racing unit, Callaway Competition, which achieved successes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and later a European GT racing team. A longtime helicopter pilot and Board Director for Kaman Corporation, Reeves was in recent years a founding adviser to a hydrogen-powered and composite-intensive, blended-wing aircraft start-up with funding from NASA and the Air Force. Sent in by Stefan Pagnani
Reeves Callaway was a very erudite and engaging fellow, always interested in his friends and their lives more than talking about his … and that was while designing and building some of the best damn Corvettes ever seen. He’ll be sorely missed. Doug Stokes

Reeves Callaway, 1947-2023. I don’t know if you know my close friend Reeves Callaway passed away. I have so many souvenirs with Reeves. I remember very well when he ordered from Stand21 the drivers’ equipment when Callaway team raced for the first time the 24-Hours. He came to see me before the race with his dad Elye Reeves who created the Golf Company. We were sharing time together during my California trip. I know very well his kids Pete, Walker and Lily. Yves Yves Morizot

YVES: There will be more on Reeves in the next issue.

3) I’m Greg Long, Russell Long’s brother. I just recently started receiving your newsletter, I think Steve Reyes forwarded it. My brother passed Aug 23, 2022. He was a helluva funny car driver, drove the Sundance, Pabst Blue Ribbon Charger, drove for Schumacher, Jungle Jim and the ‘Goose’ (McEwen). Not sure if you mentioned Russell’s passing but if not, I know he had many friends and fans. Feel free to contact me if you’d like. Thanks Greg Long.

GREG: Welcome. Please send an obituary or history of your brother or a notice from the mortuary. I would like to post it. Perhaps we can work on a short biography of you and your brother.

4) On July 15th the Lions Automobilia Foundation honored Ed “Isky the Camfather” Iskenderian. NHRA Sportsman and Fuel Funny Car World Champion Jack Beckman served as Master of Ceremonies for the event. The Sold-Out car show started at 9AM along with the opening of the Museum where attendees can enjoy donuts and coffee in Rick’s Cafe. At 12:15 pm, a special presentation and awards ceremony was held, culminating in a celebration of Isky’s birthday with a special birthday cake.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Ed Iskenderian’s 102nd birthday at Lions Automobilia Foundation and Museum,” said Rick Lorenzen, Founder of the Lions Automobilia Foundation. “This event offers a unique opportunity for automotive enthusiasts to come together, pick up a limited-edition t-shirt, enjoy a cool car show, and pay tribute to the incredible legacy of Ed Iskenderian. With Isky’s family, friends, and the exceptional exhibits at our museum, it will undoubtedly be an unforgettable celebration.”

The Southern California Section of SAE International joined the party to present Ed with the Peter Bryant Award honoring motorsports technical excellence. The Lexan and Titanium permanent award will be on display at the Lions Automobilia Foundation and Museum in Rancho Dominguez.

The Lions Automobilia Foundation and Museum is located at Price Transfer on 2790 East Del Amo Boulevard in Rancho Dominguez, California, offering an immersive experience for car and racing enthusiasts. With an extensive collection that spans the history of automobile racing at legendary Lions Drag Strip and the Long Beach Grand Prix, new exhibits under construction are a tribute to Long Beach Marine Stadium, Ascot Raceway, iconic racers like Parnelli Jones and Bill Stroppe, and recent contributions from esteemed donor Clint Eastwood. Eastwood’s noteworthy additions include the Chevy pick-up from the movie “Bridges of Madison County” and Mercury Grand Torino movie cars, alongside replicas of famous vehicles like the Batmobile, “Back to the Future’s” DeLorean, “Christine,” “KITT,” the “General Lee” Dodge Charger, Thelma & Louise’s T-bird, and an impressive collection of meticulously restored Willys Automobiles. The museum showcases a wide array of remarkable vehicles. For more information about the Lions Automobilia Museum please visit LionsAutomobilia.org. Lana Chrisman, Museum Director

Replies on Isky’s (Ed Iskenderian) 102 birthday party at the Lions Automobilia Museum, in Rancho Dominguez, on July 15, 2023.

“Isky’s 102 birthday party at the Lions Automobilia Museum on July 15th was a memorable occasion and all of you are to be congratulated for making his big day so memorable. It was a pleasure to see and talk to so many; you make my day and I know you made Isky’s day special. Thank you to Rick Lorenzen, Lana Chrisman, Kenny Youngblood and all the staff and docents who made our stay so wonderful. More thanks to all who came to display their cars and to set up booths for displays. The Lions is a well-run and fun place to hang out. It is also an archive of immense historical value to the car culture. If I forgot to mention (actually nag you) to work on your biographies and stories to leave behind to the next generation, please start now, and if you need my help just write to me.” Richard Parks

“It was as you say, a lovely experience, especially for me as a number of old friends who I hadn’t seen in many moons all came to the party. Lions is really taking up the challenge of running first-class events. I had the pleasure of seeing and talking to a broad number of people many of whom are my heroes. It was a magical meet.” Doug Stokes

“The Peter Bryant Challenger Award was conceived by veteran racer Dave Wolin and long-time motorsports PR practitioner Doug Stokes. First presented in 2010 at the ‘Legends of Riverside’ event at the Riverside Raceway Museum, the Peter Bryant Challenger Award pays homage to the work that Bryant did in the technical and design side of the racing sport. Since the Riverside Museum closed in 2016, the organizers have been in search of a new organization to tend to the annual award. SAE SoCal has stepped up to the role. Ed Iskenderian, also known as the ‘Camfather’ has been an innovator, engineer, and racer for over 80 years! Iskenderian turns 102 this month but continues to be active in the business that carries his name.” From Doug Stokes

5) We just came back from Ed “Isky” Iskenderian’s 102nd Birthday Party at Lions Drag Racing Musem today! It was epic with so many of the greats still alive. Ed was sharp and in good spirits with many people that love him around. If you are ever driving on the street and you see a guy wearing a helmet please do not race him. hiddenpioneers.

6)
Good morning, Richard, it’s really good to hear from you and thanks for a quick and positive reply, it’s much appreciated. You mention 35 volumes, I have a 30-page document, see attachment, is that one of the same? Thank you for permission to use whatever we need. Do you know if any of this has been published and do you have or are any of the original documents still about? Simon, who I believe you already know and copied in your reply, sent me a copy of your Motorsports Newsletter #7. I only have this one email address so please add me to your mailing list. I’ve added Nick Pettitt’s email address this time. Nick is the most knowledgeable person I know on British Drag Racing especially the late 1950’s and all the 1960’s and follows on up to 1990. He edits all the Pioneers stories ready for Simon to upload all photos and other items to any story ready for publication on eurodragster.

We’re publishing a Series of Special Events Features this year starting in August covering the early years of British Drag Racing before the American Invasion then September the 10th 2023. As I’m sure you know will be the 60th Anniversary of when Mooneyes became the first American dragster to appear in England to race Sydney Allard’s Chrysler Dragster at Silverstone, Brighton, Church Lawford and Debden. Nick is currently writing these stories again for publication on eurodragster. Then start again in May 2024. We have been trying to find out about George Wells, the chief starter at Drag Festivals in 1964 and ’65 and also the American Commandos visits at Santa Pod in 1966 and ’67. We would like to know if he’s still alive and his whereabouts as we assumed he returned to America. He was stationed at the time in Europe with the USAF. We now have the original letter from him that he sent to Gerry Belton which brought about him becoming chief starter. We’ve already spoken to Brian Holmes who took over from George. He’s supplied us so far with text and we await some photos from him which he said he still has. You may know that he moved to California I believe in the mid to late 1960’s and is still there. Cheers from John, Simon and Nick. John Hunt, editor@eurodragster.com

JOHN: I don’t believe you have the full history of my father’s involvement in drag racing, but a portion. I will send you the entire history, but you will need to use the Table of Contents for each year as there is no Index. His story was simply too big to allow time for an Index. That and the biographies and articles that I wrote have not been published. I send it out free of charge to whomever would like to read it. The history is from first-hand documents or other sources. I will add your email and Nick’s as well. If there is anyone else in the UK who wants to be added to the Motorsports Newsletter just send me their email addresses.

My university degree is in History and my professor advised me that the number one effort historians should undertake is biographies. Rather than do long bios I emphasize short ones because that gives volume to the accumulation of biographical histories. A hundred short bios are more substantial than one long bio. If you are interested in how I do them, I will be glad to help you. Once my system is mastered you should be able to create a bio on a person in roughly two hours. I will be glad to start you out.
My next unsolicited advice is directed toward promoting your group. Find newsletters, websites, podcasts, groups, blogs, etc, and send them regular updates, about 2 weeks to a month apart, short (50-200 words) about what you are doing; Hall of Fames, reunions, shows, races, individuals, anniversaries, meetings, etc. It needs to be constant and avoid press releases. I adapt press releases because they tend to be repetitive, long-winded, full of adjectives and short on details. Make what you send out, especially to people like me who want to know, short, fact-filled, relevant and detailed, but OFTEN. You want your message to be broadcast constantly so that your programs stay fresh in the public’s mind.

17) CATALOG Review for the Gone Racin’ Series. CARtech Auto Books and Manuals, reviewed by Richard Parks, 13 July 2023.

Catalogs are rarely saved, with the exception being by historians and researchers into a particular culture, but they are pure gold as far as uncovering the past is concerned. CARtech’s catalog, “Auto Books and Manuals” is a case in point. The quality is on the upside, with paper quality high, 8 1/2 x 11 inches in size, 32 pages in length and a high quality of textual description to go along with the photographs of the front covers of their books and manuals for sale. The public doesn’t need to buy a catalog as the company will send them out to you for free and versions are also found on the internet. For the full review send me an email requesting the review.

Ideas embodied in the Roarer and the Model O were drawn on to produce the twin-cylinder LE range of motorcycles; these, however, were not well received by the motorcycling public, and many blame the production of the LE for the eventual demise of the company. 20) I remember Bob Airheart. He helped me when I was in need of information about the brakes on my Valkyrie. He was surprised that the company Fiberfab used his brakes on a production car sporting a Chevy 500 hp 427 cu, 5-speed, ZF transaxle performance car. At the time they didn’t make his brakes anymore, I was in a bit of a stuck zone. But he was kind to help if there was another option out there. I later learned that the car I had, was built by Keith Black for Tom Martin. It used to have a Chevrolet aluminum ZL1 427 cu with 800 horsepower and a Formula 1 six-speed transaxle. Of course, the transaxle couldn’t take the punishment from the monstrous engine and blew it up. They replaced it back to a 327 cu with a Corvair transaxle. I also learned that the original owner of the Fiberfab company took my car to NASA’s wind tunnel to see its aerodynamics when in development to handle its high speed. Of course, the amusement of the factory car’s parachute was really there to help stop the ferocious beast. It was neat to know that it was a very competitive car in the SCCA and won in the open window class. Rest In Peace Airheart and thanks. Spencer Simon

21) I want to thank Acura for allowing me to Test drive the new 2023 TLX Type S (Tiger Eye Pearl) color that is Amazing! One of the highlights was Ed wearing an Acura 2022 IMSA Champions hat I gave him a couple months ago! Dave Marek pointed out that on stage it was COOL. Before heading to Lions drag racing museum, we stopped to pick up another Legend family member Richard Parks, Wally’s son who is another COOL (Hidden Pioneer). We also became friends after meeting 2 years ago at the (NHRA) Winter Nationals in Pomona. His passion for the youth comes from his Dad who I had the pleasure of talking with one-on-one several times alone. Great man to say the least. It was good to see so many big names here to enjoy Ed’s 102 Birthday party. Looking forward to many more in the future. Enjoy the photos here on the Hidden Pioneers facebook page: (20+) Facebook. 22) From Ernie and Elaine Nagamatsu; 1961 MacDonald Corvette Special. July 2023 Kent, Washington

At the Kent Washington Historic Races, the launch of the #00 was a gathering of people and spirits circling around the just completed #00 Corvette Special. There was the bonding of historical racing stories which included Joe Freitas, Wally Peat, and Larry Webb.

The 1961 Dave MacDonald Corvette Special bringing together a brilliant race shop with Mike, among others such as John, Dale, Chauncy, Steve, Brian, and Randy. We were all so inspired with the determination and focus of Rich MacDonald to be with us despite his brave fighting the side effects of heavy Chemo. Rich was just diagnosed with inoperable Cancer and Chemo for life extension. The interaction of our Team developed into indescribable moments as one just had to be there to experience the feel-good feelings and seeing the #00 and strong prayers for Rich. The SOVERN race organization providing special solo Parade Laps for Rich MacDonald as his dad, Dave, had Championship accomplishments in both Shelby Cobras and Corvettes, which were the themes of the race weekend. Rich drove the #00 in the parade laps, wearing a special #00 Corvette Special driving suit. Rich held my hand tightly and said, “Ernie, I don’t know how many days I have left, but this is the best day of my life, dad is watching.”

The race organizers stepped up again with the help of Jake Angel to develop an early Corvette race car parade laps, with Brad Shinn, Corky, Doug, Bob & Beky Pengraph, Debbie, Sherri, and many others. Corky personally assisted us in securing the very first racing #00 Logbook and sign the first race entry. Bob made sure our friends received proper Media Credentials and they wore their vests proudly. Our team went to the Sunday early morning Flaggers briefing to distribute special trophies and gifts to the volunteer flaggers and marshals. It was so moving, as Joe Freitas stepped forward to thank the flaggers, as he was the former racer that raced on Airport tracks with hay bales in the corners, hay bales as skimp safety barriers for flaggers of days past. We all proudly wore our embroidered #00 Corvette Special Team shirts with pride. A resounding moment was watching Joe and Wally autograph the dash of the #00 to add to the prior autograph by Rich MacDonald. Dave MacDonald left us on May 30, 1964, at the Indy 500 in a horrific crash with Eddie Sachs.

We watched Joe in his recreated 1957 Corvette early racecar, in the parade lap and to have Vicki as a passenger, remembering her as a little girl and Dave MacDonald’s daughter. Rich did the parade lap for early Corvette race cars, leading out with the #00 Corvette Special and with Wally Peat, the builder of the original #00 along with Max Balchowsky, Jim Simpson and Wally being some of Dave MacDonald’s best friends.

The #00 raced in its glowing orange red colors. The hugs were stronger than usual, tears flowed from time to time and sometimes we were speechless. The hospitality and support of SOVERN beamed on us again. As the low angled rays of sun glowed from the West, we presented the well-deserved Best Damn Garage trophy to Mike Velcher and his crew.
