Large field of Pro Modifieds & Quick 32 Sportsman teams compete at Empire Dragway

Empire Dragway’s Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Challenge V Results

LEICESTER, NEW YORK (August 28, 2023) – Race fans were treated to a large field of Pro Modified, Top Dragster and Top Sportsman entries recently, at Leicester, New York’s Empire Dragway. The weekend of August 18-19 saw 41 Top Dragsters and Top Sportsman cars taking part in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series and 21 Pro Modified cars competing at the two-day meet. Empire Dragway also hosted the first round of this year’s Northeast Outlaw Pro Mod Challenges, on June 30 & July 1, with the NEOPMA and PMRA Pro Modifieds and Quick 32 Sportsman Series running full fields.

Of the 21 Pro Modifieds of the NEOPMA and PMRA entered into competition, Melanie Salemi of Buffalo, NY, qualified number one in the field, with a 3.605 second, 207.56 mph qualifying run. She was eliminated in the final round by Maryland’s Derek Ward, who qualified third. He took the victory with a 3.591 second, 203.71 mph posting over Salemi’s 3.617 second, 198.41 mph in the Pro Modified final.

With excellent track conditions and weather, a new track record for Pro Modifieds was set on Saturday by Ward, with his 3.591 second final run. He had already broken the record earlier in the day, during the third round of eliminations, with a 3.594 second, 211.37 mph run.

There were 19 Top Dragsters teams and 22 Top Sportsman teams ready to do battle on the eighth-mile as well. Qualifying number one in Top Dragster class was Mark Romanofsky of Hilton, NY with a 3.792 second, 194.81 mph pass, but he was eliminated in the first round. Working their way through the ladder to the final, number 11 qualifier Cody Reome of McGraw, NY faced Rich Yacos of Cambria, NY, who qualified eighth. It was Reome who took the win with a 4.475 second, 145.87 mph run over Yacos’ losing 4.394 second, 160.89 mph pass.

Mike Wagg of Troy, ON, paced the Top Sportsman cars, qualifying first, with a 3.972 second, 183.87 mph pass, but was taken out in round one of eliminations. Number three qualifier Dan Germano of Macedon, NY, took top eliminator with a 4.245 second, 162.05 mph pass over 16th qualifier and runner-up Doug Lynden of Bergen, NY, who ran a 4.829 second, 141.64 mph final run.
