1) EDITOR: The newsletters are being rejected in numbers by your spam filters, and part of this is due to added images and photos, so from now on I will list the caption, the sender of the photo and their email address and if you want to see the photo you will need to contact the photographer (and make a new friend).
AND: I try (really, I do try) to keep each subject short. Where I can’t then I will serialize your comments over several issues. Notice that some readers submit MULTIPLE comments. That’s fine and I encourage you to be one of the unremunerated reporters like Don Smith or Epartrade. This is a non-commercial newsletter, one of about 10 or more that I have created in the last 23 years. Its purpose is to learn, to support and to have fun with it. No ads are ever solicited.
AND: The newsletter is late due to a month-long bout with sinus infection. Bear with me (growl), especially if I repeat things.

3) Quote from Jerry Cookson: “After all these years, it’s been a fantastic experience to relive our memories within the sport that we have respected and been a part of our lives for over 50 years or more. Naturally, it’s had its ups and downs, but the crowning glory in its reality is that Dad can look back on all his achievements and recognitions which ultimately led to the family name being inducted into the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame. For me, and from a very early age, I feel satisfied that the experiences and the knowledge I have accumulated over the years is a valued memory of the sport and the many friendships made. The only downside is that we’ve lost so many of those friends in recent years which is why I’m happy to give something back to the sport with my continued involvement with the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame and British Drag Racing Historians. I can safely say that we’ve both enjoyed reliving our memories and being part of Eurodragster.com’s Pioneer Stories series.” PART 3. http://www.eurodragster.com/news/features/blogs/cooksons_pt3/default.asp.
EDITOR: What I LOVE is that groups in motorsports keep a history of their racing. CRA, NASCAR, Open Wheel, WRA, SCTA and others CREATE your own group histories and find a place where that info can be stored.

6) Hi Richard, just a friendly reminder about the Wally Parks Nostalgia Nationals – Famoso Dragstrip this weekend. We have full fields of TF Dragster and Funny Cars in addition to over 400 cars from various classes tearing up the historic ¼ mile at Famoso Drag Strip. The Grand Marshal Don Prudhomme will be on site to sign autographs and kick off the festivities. We hope to see everyone there! Pat Wright
PAT: I appreciate the notice and what you do, but the listed date in the poster is October 13, 2023, and there is no possibility of my attending at such short notice. Also, I am battling a devilish sinus infection which keeps me home. The Motorsports Newsletter began in 2000 as the Car Racers Newsletter to promote the activities at the Motorsports Museum.
Please, however, send me a synopsis of the event to post in my newsletter. For all future events begin notifying me at least a year in advance if you have the schedules agreed upon. Then send a notice (for each event) monthly, then twice a month the last three months, and weekly until the event. Make it short but send notices often. Don’t overlook people and volunteers. If someone stands out send me a nice message about that person. Don’t overlook hard-working and supportive wives who always seem to get overlooked.

8) Our daughter wrote Rod’s biography, and it was launched in 2018, we had an enormous book launch in our showroom, and it has been a big seller here. Your Father’s biography would have been a huge undertaking as he was such a legend in his time. I know how much goes into putting together a successful biography as I was at the forefront with our daughter researching and finding material, luckily, I had kept records and even had Rod’s school books which had many drawings of what he wanted to build instead of concentrating on his schoolwork. Kind regards, Carol Hadfield

10) Robert Wickens, paralyzed from the waist down in an IndyCar crash five years ago, has won a racing championship in the IMSA Touring Car Class finale of the Michelin Pilot Challenge. All Wickens needed was an eighth-place finish to earn the title, and he and co-driver Harry Gottsacker were fourth in the Fox Factory 120 at Road Atlanta on Friday. It was the fifth straight class championship for Bryan Herta Autosports. Wickens, hurt in a crash at Pocono in 2018, uses a hand control system for a paralyzed driver. Wickens said he thought he showed what he could do when he began driving for the team a year ago. AP auto racing: https://apnews.com/hub/auto-racing.

13) Tom Fritz is a Master Painter of the hot rod and racing culture. He sells both original and prints. Another great artist is Kenny Youngblood. Both have displayed their work at the NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona. Kenny also supports the Lions Automobilia Museum in Rancho Dominguez, CA. There is no better investment than a Fritz or Youngblood painting on your wall.

17) I am very glad to know that what we are doing at DRGE is having an impact and that people are watching. When I started out with a simple Facebook page it was with the sole intention of sharing all the drag racing photos I had taken over the years. Very early on a gentleman, who I now consider to be a friend, by the name of John Towle contacted me and asked me if I would be interested in interviewing Joe Amato and Joe Schubeck. I had no idea how to conduct an interview, but I gave it my best shot. Now 4 years later I am doing long form interviews with some of the people who were my childhood heroes. Our latest interview was with Alison Lee. The response was tremendous. Randy Herpel, Founder of: Drag Racing’s Golden Era Online magazine: https://drge68.com/. 18) Hello Richard, I have acquired a number of books and models from the widow of Brian Sparrow, my friend for some 57 years. Brian was an inductee into the British Drag Racing Hall of Fame for his work in helping establish the sport in its earliest years. Amongst the books I was pleased to find a copy of your father’s “Drag Racing Yesterday and Today”. Even more gratifying was finding it signed by Wally with a dedication to Brian from their meeting at the British Drag Festival 1966! Honoured to have some history in my hands. Cheers from, Chris Pattison (Allard Dragon as a teenager, Grim Reaper nostalgia Altered as an old man!).
CHRIS: Collections are a memorial to memories, people, places and things. Now you have to find a home for your collection and pass it down to the next generation when you are no longer able to enjoy it. That is my problem as well and so I always look for “homes” for my collection.

22) Hi Richard, it has been a while since we have talked, and I want you to know that I thoroughly enjoy the Newsletters. I also want to let you know Steve Gibbs has invited me to be at the Nitro Revival November 3-4, this year to sign autographs again as I did when the Nitro Revival was at Laguna Seca, Monterey a few years ago. Hope to see you there. Chic Cannon
CHIC: I hope to be there if I can get rid of this sinus infection and cough (bronchitis).
READERS: Chic Cannon is one of the original Drag & Safety Safari members and started with NHRA as far back as 1952 or so. I’ve promised Steve Gibbs to promote his event and to sign autographs. Apparently, my autograph is desirable today, which means only one thing (my father told me this), I am now very, very OLD.

29) PART 5. During the mid to late seventies, Ken Cooper continued to work on Blast from the Past, the car getting longer and losing weight, Ken giving some attention to the rear axle and cylinder heads too. Ken raced with the British Flathead Association and even built cars for other racers. After he started a family, Ken kept wrenching the car however Pete Hollingsworth became the driver with Herb Andrews also on the team until Pete got his own car and eventually Blast from the Past was sold. 31) TO ALL READERS: If you have car shows, races, reunions or events use this advice. Keep it short and fact filled. Send OFTEN. Vary each new notice and don’t forget to mention people involved, anyone that needs to stand out and be recognized. Start a year ahead of your event. People read short snippets better than long releases. The actual press release is not that important but dividing it into 20 or so snippets will keep reminding people of your event.

36) I was playing around with the keyboard and learned a trick and it might work for you. I held down the control key (don’t release it as you roll) on my keyboard and then used the “roller” on the mouse and I could increase (roll it forward) or decrease (roll it backward) the size of the print. See if you can do that on your computer and if so then you can read any size print that is sent to you. Best, Richard

37) John Hunt sent in the following on British drag racers: John Wright. “John Wright, brought up in a farming family, was encouraged by his father to become mechanically minded from an early age and became a collector of vehicles as space on the farm allowed for storage of many diverse and sometimes extremely rare cars, which John was able to practise his modifying skills on. Later, he sold a Rolls Royce which became the basis of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. He also got a flavour for American cars and hot rodding which would prove invaluable when he discovered drag racing.”

47) Dick Martin and I will be at Steve Gibb’s Nitro Reunion, Irwindale Speedway, November 4th (event runs from 3rd to 5th) at the autograph table signing posters and anything else that needs signing. Gibbs has sent up a lot of tables under the tent near the drag strip and I counted over 100 celebrities of racing there. Sat next to Don Prudhomme, but he gave me “THAT LOOK” and so I exchanged seats with Dick Martin who wrote about Don for Rod & Custom. Linda Vaughn, Ed Iskenderian, and so many more were there too. Bring your family and whatever you want signed and we’ll oblige. That goes for you too (Bob) Muravez, fans want your signature too. Just received word that Chic Cannon will be coming to.
