One of the highlights of each year’s conference, the reception is an opportunity for ISHA members to network with colleagues and make new friends in a casual atmosphere. The MSHFA worked closely with ISHA to secure popular motorsports broadcaster and publisher Dick Berggren and Legends of Racing Radio Show host and former NASCAR Hall of Fame Historian Buz McKim to speak during the two-day conference. 4) John Hunt of the British Drag Racing Historians Association wrote in about their group. Here are some of the articles that they have on file for UK drag racers. Brian Gibson & Bob Venison, Part 1 – Wild Thing (published January 7, 2022). This is the last story in Series 3 of UK Drag Pioneers stories. “Tony Russell started in the sport by joining a car club called the Road Runners in 1966. He encountered Team Phaeton and joined as they were building their Jaguar engine dragster which became Phaeton 1 and, later Limelight. The team ran the car until 1969, with some great experiences along the way. The buyer of Limelight was Jaguar specialist George Nolan who replaced the 6-cylinder engine with a V-12 and renamed it Methdrinker. After running it throughout the 1970’s, George sold it to Steve Clarke and Nigel Rigden who reverted it to 6-cylinder power and named it The Good Guys. Meanwhile author Tony now runs a self-built Ford roadster.” http://www.euro

6) Jim McFarland tribute, written by Dave Wallace Jr for Hot Rod Magazine. SERIALIZED with permission.
“UT’s loss was your gain, fellow rodders. During 19 years at Edelbrock, Jim was known throughout the industry for intake-manifold designs that became standard equipment in drag, oval-track, and road racing, and for the street. Simultaneously, he convinced Vic Edelbrock Jr to expand his line from intakes to Edelbrock camshafts, then cylinder heads, and other complementary performance products. Lesser known ‘but no less significant’ are his decades of diplomatic successes behind the scenes in Sacramento and Washington, patiently demonstrating to legislators and regulators how high performance could coexist with environmental protection. As early as 1966-67, Jim alerted manufacturers and HRM readers of proposed regulations that almost no one else saw coming from what became the California Air Resources Board and the federal Environmental Protection Agency. His working relationships with agency officials continue to this day. ‘The purpose is education, just like in the very beginning,’ he explains. ‘As a result, the level of communication among the agencies and product manufacturers, through SEMA, is remarkable now.’ Since this amazing journey all started right here at HOT ROD a half-century ago, we asked Jim McFarland to take it from there.”
7) I can’t say ‘thank you” enough for the review of the Roland “The Hawaiian” Leong: Drag Racing’s Iconic Owner & Tuner book. I have written 12 drag racing books but this one has been very special to me for a very amazing and successful man. I grew up watching his success and seeing his tough times with him by riding out the storms. Although he never won a World Championship title as an owner, I’ve felt for a long time that he was well deserving to have a book written about his accomplishments and what he has been to drag racing. I have been friends with Roland Leong for several years, so it’s been a true honor to write about his personal and drag racing lives. In no way am I a writer, I’m just a fan! Since his health has been declining these past years, I completed the book in just nine months, three less than the mandatory one-year time frame. I wanted to give back to Roland for all the fond memories he gave to me and I’m very happy that Roland has gotten to see the finished product. I will forward this review to Roland as I’m sure he’ll be pleased. Thank you once again for your review. Now, I’m on to the next project! Thank you. Regards, Lou Hart

9) EDITOR: I found this letter in my draft box. Apologies to all if I have not run this letter in the newsletter before. “I like the newsletter very much, I really look forward to them, they are great and very insightful. Keep up the good work. I live in Northern California and have been involved in Drag Racing since I was little. I used to go to the Fremont drag strip every chance I could. I’m related to Al Hubbard, of Vic Hubbard’s, he was my uncle. My Dad raced a flathead powered fuel coupe in the early fifty’s and met your dad at a race in Pomona in the mid-fifties. My Godfather is Rich Guasco of Pure Hell fame and I have worked on his Altered and numerous Top Fuel dragsters and Funny cars for the past 28 years, mostly Nostalgia. I currently work on Dan Horan’s T/F Nostalgia Dragster with Pete Kaiser and Larry Gotelli, and we won the 2021 NHRA Heritage Series Championship. I learned everything I know from Rich. Sadly, my dad passed away last October 1st, 2022, from a stroke, he was 88 years old. My Dad was a member of the Hayward Headhunters race club out of Hayward CA. My Dad was born in Buena Park, CA in 1934 and moved up North with his parents to Castro Valley in 1949 where he met his future Brother-in-law Al Hubbard and the Forsberg brothers, Jerry and Denny and started Drag racing soon after. I have attached a picture of my dad’s race car. Please keep sending me the newsletter and thank you for doing all you do to keep us informed.” Sincerely, Bob Raymond Jr robertraymond426.
AND: Rich Guasco and his car, Pure Hell, was in our Juggers racing group. At the races I timed him many times. Sometimes he had a difficult time keeping the car straight since the wheelbase was so short. Dema Elgin (Elgin Cams)
AND: I was at the end of the track waiting on the return road at Indy Raceway Park. I was working with the Whit Bazemore FC team approximately 1995, but I remember watching in momentary fear and then awe as Pure Hell crossed the finish line very sideways. I was glad he saved it. I spent a lot of years, the 1970’s and ’80’s in San Diego and LA Motorcycle racing, Sprint Cars and then Indy Cars. Since then, at Air Flow working for Mazda USA amongst others, LSR cars and motorcycle race bikes, etc. Here is a team that I am currently working with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41E4GmrNSkg. The team is a good bunch of guys. They are from Puerto Rico. Some of the back-and-forth pit dialogue is in Spanish. But racing and racing fun is universal. Don Redmon

13) Steve Gibbs, written by Dick Martin 2016. SERIALIZED for the Motorsports Newsletter.
“If you’re a drag racer, you know Steve Gibbs. He wasn’t a mechanical wiz, he wasn’t a racer, and he really didn’t have a hot rod in high school, but he had a deep love of drag racing that carried him to the heights of the sport. Steve was born in a farming region of North Carolina. His parents divorced early on, and Steve’s young single mom moved to Baldwin Park, California, in 1947 when Steve was 7 years old. The primary reason for the move was Steve’s little sister. She had a heart condition, and the surgery she needed would be performed at Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. (She passed away from leukemia two years later.) Steve’s mother, Selma, remarried, and the family moved briefly to his stepfather’s hometown of Chicago, then returned to Baldwin Park in 1953. His stepdad was a tool cutter and grinder.”Dick Martin can be reached through Gone Racin’ at RnParks1. To see the captioned photographs go to https://www.motortrend.com/

He is a retired lawyer and professional car restorer who is also expert on pre-war track cars; Packards, Millers, race cars, having written specifically about Miller track cars of the twenties and thirties. He’s also a lifelong fan of Corvette drag racing and built or restored several C1 drag cars. He noticed that Corvette historical literature virtually ignored drag racing, so he has now produced the above-mentioned book. See https://a.co/d/dTa4Ps0. From Roger Meiners

Ford Anglias of Yesteryear Part 1. “Brian Gibson and Bob Venison got interested in hot rods and drag racing in the early 1960’s and were inspired by the 1964 Dragfest to build a gasser. 20) Dick Martin and I will be at Steve Gibb’s Nitro Reunion, Irwindale Speedway, November 4th (event runs from 3rd to 5th) at the autograph table signing posters and anything else that needs signing. Gibbs has sent up a lot of tables under the tent near the drag strip and I counted over 100 celebrities of racing there. Sat next to Don Prudhomme, but he gave me “THAT LOOK” and so I exchanged seats with Dick Martin who wrote about Don for Rod & Custom. Ed Iskenderian, Linda Vaughn, Gibbs and so many more were there too. Bring your family and whatever you want signed and we’ll oblige. That goes for you too (Bob) Muravez, fans want your signature too.

24) The United States National Speedway Championships 9/23/23 by Howie Zechner. Then there’s the new kids on the block. For many it’s their first US National. But don’t get the idea they are a pushover. Slater Lightcap and Alex Martin are both AMA Under 21 Champions. Probably getting pointers for his 4-time World Speedway Champion dad, Willbur Hancock is considered the most improved rider of the year. Then there’s Charlie Trana. Last year as a Junior he won the 250cc Speedway National Championship and now that he’s 16 years old a D1 racer on a 500cc machine. No disrespect to any I didn’t mention cause the field is stellar and any one of these Speedway aces could take home the title.
