1) EDITOR SEZ: To Steve Gibbs and daughter Cindy and all the staff of the Nitro Revival Reunion; What a wonderful event you put on this last weekend. So many people mentioned how thankful they are that you put on the Nitro Revival Reunion. I spoke to a number of staff and volunteers, and they are such great people. You always did put on the best show. I saw how everyone worked so hard and how tired you all must be. Please keep up the Nitro Revival as people truly love it.

2) Michael Douglas Cook Sr was born on November 21, 1952, in Compton, California, and passed away on October 26, 2023, in Norco, California, at the age of 70. He was loved and cherished by many people including his wife Penny Sue Cook; his children, Staci Cook-Hebert and Mike Cook Jr; and his grandchildren, Ashton, Rachel, Courtney and Logan. His dedication and commitment to his craft were an inspiration to many in the motor sports community and his contributions to racing were substantial. To leave a message for his family go to https://www.echovita.com/us/obituaries/ca/norco/
michael-douglas-cook-sr-17154481. From Echovita.com.
EDITOR: It is with great sorrow that we mention the passing of Mike Cook, whose family heritage in drag and land speed racing cannot be matched. His father, Doug Cook, and Mike were prominent in the Stone/Woods & Cook drag car. Mike went on to duplicate and surpass his father with various record setting cars at the dry lakes, Bonneville and the Muroc Reunions in the 1990’s. Mike crafted his own LSR meets, traveling as far as Bolivia, in South America, and to Bonneville. A past President of the SCTA, Mike was a steadying force for progress in land speed racing. Our condolences to Penny, Mike Jr, Staci and all of the Cook family, friends and associates. Mike will be missed.

3) Mike Cook Celebration of Life in Norco, California on Saturday, November 18. We’re Looking forward to seeing everyone and listening to the great stories we all have of dad. 4) SCTA El Mirage 2-day November meet is this weekend – Tech on Friday, November 10, Racing on Saturday & Sunday, November 11-12. I’m including information below about a couple of memorials: Les Leggitt Celebration of Life at El Mirage on Saturday, November 11. Lots of Sidewinders ran at El Mirage in October: Willie Freudiger, Randall Foehner (driving for Eight-in-a-Row-Racing), Gerard Collier, Ikuya Negishi, Chip Bennett, Keith Pedersen (WGB), Mark Summitt, Kat Diamond, Kiyo (of Kiyo’s Garage) and Nick Schwarz. Mat Thomas drove for Frank Sloan as a guest. Joel Wirth in the Empire Special was the fastest car of the meet at 230.767 mph. From Stephanie Adler

5) A question from a reader. “… (a story) is filled with many untruths. I was there. … (another person) if still alive might have some things to say. Many falsehoods (were written). … Lots more to tell. Myths … created. Do I take all this to my death?”
EDITOR REPLIES: No, you don’t have to take all that you know to the grave. I cover stories and history and know that there is never one side to a story. I also know that history is distorted by bias and by time (which fogs our memories). There is positive bias and negative bias, and I am as guilty as anyone when it comes to bias and time. Because I know bias and time distort history and I freely admit it (and I apologize for it when it happens), people have come to trust me. Write your story and send it to me but use good judgment. I will post it in the newsletter. Consider it a valid rebuttal to the story that you read here in the newsletter. Two sides of an argument are always better than just one side.

6) John Hunt, British Drag Racing Historians Assn wrote in about their group. John is at johnhunt.drn. Here are some of the articles that they have on file for UK drag racers. Pat & Chris Church, Part 1-Gold Rush (published 21st January 2022). Quote from Pat Church: “The interview with John Hunt and drag racing and hot rod history guru Nick Petit certainly brought back the memories of those early days. It was a joy to read ours and fellow pioneers write ups and somewhat nostalgic. I hope we played a small part in the growth of the sport of drag racing and hot rods.”

8) Steve Gibbs, written by Dick Martin 2016. SERIALIZED for the Motorsports Newsletter.
Steve’s Baldwin Park high school was known as BP, or “Bum’s Paradise,” because of its blue-collar reputation. “I always had a knack for art and took some art classes. I majored in art at Mt. San Antonio College. I could have pursued a commercial art career, but drag racing got in the way,” he laughed. Steve worked as a box boy at Market Basket while in school and later at an independent market called Moody’s Market, where his future wife, Gloria, worked as well. Steve and Gloria attended school together in Baldwin Park, and they were 20 when they married. In fact, food markets played a part in Steve’s path to a drag racing career. Steve saved his box-boy money and bought a ’50 Ford club coupe for $450 at a used car lot in 1956. “It really wasn’t much of a car,” Steve admitted. “I didn’t have a lot of money, but I did get it painted Naples Orange. That was about it.” Dick Martin can be reached through Gone Racin’ at RnParks1@Juno.com. To see the captioned photographs go to https://www.motortrend.com/staff/dick-martin/.

10) The November issue of Vintage Metal Journal is at robertcampbell4.
READERS: Bob and the members of the Vintage Sports Car Club of Western Australia (VSCC) is a unique group on the other side of the world from us. Like all Aussies they have fun with vehicles: cars, trucks, tractors, planes, boats and more. The only thing that I didn’t see in their amazing Journal were trains. Western Australia has everything you could want in the way of adventure: beaches, deserts, mountains, plains in an area the size of our Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean and from Canada to Mexico in size. They have some beautiful sports cars with unique styling. Interesting car shows, road races and gymkhanas, rallies and historical articles. The Collie Coalfields Classic was held at Collie Motorplex, a 2.55-kilometer road course about 130 miles south of Perth, Australia last month.

11) Mark Greene at Cars Yeah info has conducted 2,417 Podcasts with some very interesting people in motorsports and the automotive world. This week Mark will interview Tom Nault from A Talk About EVs; Paul Ehrmann from Arc of Triumph; David Silberkleit from Bugeyeguys; and Jerry Cox from Killer Airbags. Cars Yeah mailing address, 4618 131st St Ct NW, Gig Harbor, Washington 98332.

12) The United States National Speedway Championships 9/23/23 by Howie Zechner. The format for this Championship simple. Four rider line up in back of a gate made of ribbons that stretch across the racetrack. Made from a thin paper product they break if I bike goes thru them before the referee hits the button to make the gate go up. Easy stuff, well not really cause the riders at the line are amped. Keyed up they must muster every ounce of disciple they have not to move. Anticipating the start or breaking the tapes means you’re out for that heat. Nothings impossible but winning after a heat exclusion seldom if ever happens. Video of all the 2023 United States National Speedway Championships main event and all the races may be watched on Facebook on the RAZ Video page https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=10006.

13) Thank you for the mentions about my father’s story and mine in recent issues. Carl Olson emailed me the other day. I have known Carl since 1990. Regards, Jeremy Cookson

16) I do enjoy reading your newsletter, I’ve been removed from the street and strip drag racing scene for years (I’m in my mid 70s) I grew up racing at San Fernando and Lyons in the mid-sixties until I did my senior trip to Southeast Asia in 1968-69 and again in ’70. Did a bit more racing after I came home but the “Run what you brung“ was starting to fade away for me. Race cars and military pay wasn’t a good fit. Thanks for spending the time to put the newsletter together. I enjoy the story and the history. Some of those folks I remember. Sam Samaniego Semper Fidelis

20) Jim McFarland tribute, written by Dave Wallace Jr for Hot Rod Magazine. SERIALIZED
HRM] None of us working in the automotive press in 1965 had heard of Jim McFarland until your byline suddenly showed up in HRM. Where did you come from, anyway?
JM] Austin, Texas. We had a dirt drag strip; no speed shops closer than San Antonio. If you were a performance-hungry person, there was nothing at your fingertips. I came to rely on Racer Brown’s articles in HOT ROD. I’d been building engines since my early teens, earning extra income during school. I believed, then and now, that displacement is torque. I found a 401 Buick with an automatic to swap into my 1955 Chevy. The guys I was running with at the time said, “You like HOT ROD so much, why not write a story and send it in?” They all laughed, so I did that: I took a few pictures, wrote about the swap ’the ups and downs’ and sent it to [editor] Bob Greene. Three-or-four-months pass, no word. I’m getting teased by my buddies. One Friday afternoon, Bob calls. He said, “We’re gonna run your story, but that’s not why I called. Ray Brock and I want you to interview for a job.” They sent a plane ticket. I spent a day out there, came back. My family all said, “You’re crazy.” My very first function with other Petersen employees, one said, “Who the heck are you? Nobody knows you. We’ve all been around drag racing and cars a long time. This is not gonna work for you.” I took that as additional impetus to make sure I did it.

21) It’s just my IT crew overdoing their job, please leave me on your list! Best Regards, Gale Banks (Owner, Chief Engineer, Banks Power)
READERS: I had the privilege of visiting with Gale Banks at his manufacturing plant. He has done it all and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Motorsports Museum and promotes events as an avid motorsports’ enthusiast, hot rodder and land speed racer.

23) Aussie Invader News Update – November 2023. Hi to all. The project has moved from the construction stage to the static tie-down testing stage. This involves locating a suitable hardstand test area in a remote location with some accommodation facilities. I have visited several sites in South Australia, including Woomera, Penong and Port Lincoln, but none were suitable. They are also a long way from our Perth base. We thought finding a location would be quite easy in a big state such as Western Australia, but the past four months have proved otherwise. We are now working with a team that believes they will find this test site, hopefully within 300 km of Perth. Rosco McGlashan, rosco. Our mailing address is: AussieInvader5R, 6 Karalundie Way, Mullaloo, WA 6027 Australia.
READERS: Rosco has been working on his land speed vehicle for some time and needs financial support.

This year’s battle looks to be between at Ford GT40 Mk I, a Lola T165 and a Lola T70 but a nice array of GT machines from the era could step up to challenge, including a variety of Porsche 911s, Jaguar E-Types, two 1960s-generation big-bore Camaros and a pair of Lotus Elans. Two must-see entries are the 1965 #5 Ford GT40 Mk I of legendary Formula 1 designer and Red Bull Racing Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey who co-drives with Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley. The other is a spot-on replica of the Briggs Cunningham #22 “Le Monstre” Cadillac that raced at Le Mans in 1950. Englishman Derek Drinkwater both built and drives the mammoth rebodied Cadillac that makes its first North American appearance. From Adam Saal at saalgoodpr.

Pat learned engine building at his first day job and, after attending the 1964 Drag Festival at Blackbushe, built his Gold Rush Pop. Pat and Chris campaigned the Gold Rush with the support of their father from 1967 to 1969. After stopping racing, they sold the Pop to Barry Treacy who rebuilt it to the iconic Mister-T hot rod. http://www.eurodragster.com/news/
features/blogs/pat_church/default.asp. After selling Gold Rush, the Church brothers stayed close to drag racing whilst developing their own hot rods. Their first was a T-Bucket, widely displayed at UK drag races in the early 1970’s and featured in mainstream publications. Having founded the NDRC Roadster Register, in 1971 they founded Brighton Speed & Custom, later moving back into replica and hot rod building and restoration. http://www.eurodragster.com/news/features/blogs/

47) From: HSR Communications adam. “At the same time, adding LMP3 to HSR events will not take away any track time or alter the schedule for our existing HSR classes and championships. It is actually a benefit as all of the on-track competing series on these six weekends fall under the IMSA and HSR umbrella. We are all working together as opposed to sharing a weekend with an outside group monopolizing the race schedule and available track time.” All cars in the HSR Prototype Challenge presented by IMSA will ride on Michelin tires and use VP Racing Fuels. Ligier and Duqueine plan to have representatives onsite for technical support at each event. Each race will feature a timed pit stop. I held down the control key (don’t release it as you roll) on my keyboard and then used the “roller” on the mouse and I could increase (roll it forward) or decrease (roll it backward) the size of the print. See if you can do that on your computer and if so then you can read any size print that is sent to you. Best, Richard

56) It was nice meeting you at the Nitro Revival and here is your request for my written lyrics for The Nitro Mash!
Thank you, Ross Gallagher
The Nitro Mash 7/20/23, Lyrics Written by Ross Gallagher to the tune of Monster Mash.
“I was at Irwindale last Saturday night
I came upon a wonderful sight
For the header flames from the pipes began to rise
And suddenly to my surprise
THEY DID THE MASH!
THEY DID THE NITRO MASH!
THE NITRO MASH
IT WAS A DRAG STRIP SMASH!
THEY DID THE MASH!
YOU CAN SMELL IT IN A FLASH!
THEY DID THE MASH!
THEY DID THE NITRO MASH!
From the starting line and down through the strip
All the Cacklers were letting their motors rip,
The header flames were glowing bright
And the Cackle Master said, this is all right!
THEY DID THE MASH!
THEY DID THE NITRO MASH!
THE NITRO MASH!
IT WAS A DRAG STRIP SMASH!
THEY DID THE NITRO MASH!
YOU CAN SMELL IT IN A FLASH!
THEY DID THE MASH!
THEY DID THE NITRO MASH!
The Tirewipers were having fun
The Cackle Show had just begun
The Strip was filled with Dragsters
And a few Funny Cars too!
The ground was shaking from Nitro sounds
T.C. in Heaven was looking down!
The Nitro Tuners were about to arrive
wondering if WHO is going to drive!
THEY PLAYED THE MASH!
THEY PLAYED THE NITRO MASH!
THE NITRO MASH!
IT WAS A DRAG STRIP SMASH!
THEY PLAYED THE MASH!
YOU CAN SMELL IT IN A FLASH!
THEY PLAYED THE MASH!
THEY PLAYED THE NITRO MASH!
Out on the Strip was a terrible sight!
Seems there was a Fueler that just won’t light
They plugged in the starter and counted to five
And suddddddenlythe motor came alive!
IT’S NOW THE MASH!
IT’S NOW THE NITRO MASH!
THE NITRO MASH!
IT’S A DRAG STRIP SMASH!
IT’S NOW THE NITRO MASH!
YOU CAN SMELL IT IN A FLASH!
IT’S NOW THE MASH!
IT’S NOW THE NITRO MASH!
From the Starting Line to the Top End Blast
Everyone knows, this won’t be the last!
For those who still smelling,
This Mash was meant to
If you arrive at our Strip
Tell them that Gibbs sent you!
THEN YOU CAN MASH!
THEN YOU CAN NITRO MASH!
THE NITRO MASH!
AND DO MY DRAG STRIP SMASH!
THE NITRO MASH!
YOU CAN SMELL IT IN A FLASH!
THEN YOU CAN MASH!
THE NITROOOO MASH!
