1) EDITOR’S CORNER: Today we discuss printing and publishing your book by using a publisher (editor, reviewer, promoter, printer, finisher) and the rule here is add some big dough to the cost of your book. 1) The adage is, “you get what you pay for.” For any decent publisher (individual helping you) or Publishing House such as Motorbooks, CarTech, EVRO Publishing, etc, you can expect to pay them an hourly rate or 50 to 60% of the books price (or more). If you are famous, which 99.999% of us are not, then the publisher pays YOU for the opportunity. 2) If you don’t like being a writer, photographer, captioner, editor, reviewer, typist, promotional expert, then look for a good publisher and pay them. 3) Publishers will offer you an hourly rate or simply guestimate their expenses and tell you that your $19.99 book needs to be repriced at $69.99. Try arguing with them and they’ll add on a charge for “a neutral facilitator.” 4) Publishers will find the printer, promote your book in their catalog, do editing and spare you from much of the work. Pay them enough and they will find a co-writer (ghost writer) who will write your book for you. We call such authors who use co-writers, “couch authors.” Pay even more and they’ll do the book without you. Don’t skip on quality; some publishers are worse than I am and that’s really awful. If you have the dough and need help, don’t need income from your work, then this is the way to go. Publishing is not easy. I have reviewed this newsletter a dozen times or more and yet I still find mistakes and the computer is pure evil. See how simple publishers make it. I’ll still nag you to write your book.
AND: All links in the newsletter need to be copied and pasted into your browser in order to work.
EDITOR: Hidden Garages sent this video to us about Randy Haapala’s mesmerizing HotRod Garage. It’s on YouTube at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWQY4W2L_Bo&t=14s. Those of us who knew Randy miss his kind and jovial character. Here is a chance to see and hear him in his favorite garages full of wonderful memories that take us back to an earlier era of our youth. Thanks to Bill Montgomery and Rodney Allen Rippy of Hidden Garages and Hidden Pioneers. My father (Wally), son (Scott) and I (Richard) appreciate what Bill and Rodney do to spread the message of hot rodding, motorsports and technology in our school systems around the nation. Unless we get the schools to include vocational and blue collar trades our children will miss out on careers that are vitally needed today.
2) REMEMBERING OUR LOST FRIENDS DEPARTMENT:
a) Russell “Noisy” Johnson first got involved in the Albany Classic Around the Houses in early 2000’s, he started as a track set up volunteer after his brother-in-law asked him to come along. He proceeded on to being boss of the ‘chain gang’ chaining all the blocks together on all the corners. He joined the committee of the Albany Classic Motorsport Club sometime later and as well as the chains became the recovery vehicle driver for the event. Russell passed away on Wednesday night 26th February 2025.
‘Russell was a person you could always go to ask to help with anything and he was always willing and always a very enthusiastic person. ‘RIP Russell Johnson.’ The VSCC (Western Australia) offers its deepest condolences to his wife, Jude Johnson.
a) Brett Boughton sent this tribute to Jim Krajancich to Vintage Metal (Western Australia). As WA car enthusiasts know, Jim Krajancich was “the Bugatti man,” he ate, slept, drew, cast, filed and dreamed about Bugattis. There is a large cadre of Bugatti enthusiasts around the world, but I would wager that Jim was one of the most knowledgeable and ardent Bug enthusiasts.
His enthusiasm was contagious, and he shared his passion with many interested car people. Jim was a highly inventive engineer though he did not have any formal engineering training.
3) WE GET MAIL AND OOPS DEPARTMENT:
a) John Massingberd was the executive producer of Canada’s first nationally syndicated motorsport radio program, the Raceline Radio Network, along with Erik Tomas. This show has been the only one of its kind in Canada. John also co-produced and was the featured anchor and moderator on Snowtrax Television, a syndicated snowmobile program viewed throughout North America. Bruce F. Mehlenbacher, Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA) at Bruce.
b) The International Motor Racing Research Center presents: “Straight Line Speed-the History of Niagara Dragway.” A day of memories, stories, photos and more as seen thru the eyes of Dean Johnson, Promoter, Niagara Dragway, 1964-1974. On display will be a 1963 AA/Top Fuel Dragster “Dead End Kids.” Free and open to the public on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 1pm at International Motor Racing Research Center (IMRRC), 610 South Decatur Street, Watkins Glen, NY. Relive the history of drag racing in western NY. Call: 607-535-9044 or email: kip or www.racingarchives.org. From Kip Zeiter
c) This is one of my most challenging works, Greenland Domes; Daggers and Grozny Demons (screenplay). 868 pages and 345,723 words (2 languages doubles the size). I promised the publisher by May. I need to do a polish edit on it. But writing it I worked hard at is so hopefully I do not have to over polish it. Paul D. Escudero
EDITOR: Paul is a long-time reader of my newsletters who is professional in all things that move fast. He is also a top Sci-Fi writer who adds planes, cars, trucks, railroads, spaceships and lots of skullduggery to his stories.
d) Burt “BS” Levy is hard at work on his next book. Burt’s at Think Fast Ink, PO Box 7488, Westchester, Illinois, 60154.
e) I am overwhelmed with the amount of information that you have on all of these people. Would I be imposing to ask for the rest of the alphabet? There are names on the first A-D that I have aways wondered about and I now have a source to read about them. I know a lot of older racers and I am wondering if you would like stories about them for your records. I’d be happy to call a few of them if you want that information. Brent Cannon
BRENT: The stories are on the way in 12 emails. Please feel free to resend them to whomever would enjoy the stories. I would be honored to include the stories and bios of your friends in the Gone Racin’ Archives. Send them in when you can.
f) If anyone has info on Rod Flint and his photos it would be Dave Wallace Jr. Other photographers whom I recall shooting at San Fernando include Don Varian and Kaye Trapp who shot mainly feature material. Kaye primarily worked for the studios and was partners with Ronnie Winkle in the Kent Fuller-built ‘MagiCar‘ that Bill Pitts resurrected and became the nucleus of the ‘cackle car’ movement. From Bill Holland
BILL: Here’s a new project. Readers, send me stories and histories on photographers in motorsports for the Gone Racin’ Archives which I store. We shouldn’t forget photographers. Robin Millar is also looking for stories on cartoonists. My father was one of the funniest, wry and humorous of cartooning. His work is mainly lost, but I’ve saved a few of them.
g) Richard, thank you for the review. The subscription price is $40US, $45Canada and $65foreign. This is our 26th year and we have contributors that have been with us from the start. Some are Jim Hume, Marlo Treit, Steve Reyes and contributors around the US and abroad. Phil Morris GASSER WARS MAGAZINE.
h) I truly enjoy your newsletter, thanks for your good work. Would really like a copy of the biographies of Jim and Bob Brissette if it’s not too much trouble to send. Joe Nowocinski
JOE: You will find Jim and Bob Brissette’s story in section A-D in the WALLY AND BARBARA PARKS STORY: We Did It Our Way…Stories & Biographies #11. There are also more stories that you may find interesting. For the entire 11 volume history just let me know and I will send it to you by email. Enjoy, these are special people.
i) For what it’s worth, I dabbled a wee bit as a cartoonist and even had a panel published in Hot Rod magazine circa 1967. When I became editor of National Dragster, I pitched your dad on running cartoons; he would have nothing of it. He really had it in for Pete Millar, especially the flies that were buzzing around in his cartoons. I really admired the way Pete could capture a person with a few strokes of the pen. I had Millar do several cartoon-style ads for my clients. The ‘Isky Toons‘ that Pete did for Ed Iskenderian were certainly popular. Bill Holland
BILL: I admit to sneaking in Millar’s comics and laughing hilariously. Dad was an excellent and wry cartoonist too and sent back drawings from the Pacific during World War II. The “second” generation of Millars’ and Parks’ are close friends. As Dad once told me, “Your feelings do not have to be the same as my feelings.” The whole story of the CARtoons and my father can be found in the Wally & Barbara Parks Story; We Did It Our Way.
j) This is really some work that you have put together. I am so looking forward to diving in and absorb the missing pieces of my knowledge. Thank you so much for sharing. All of this history is remarkable how you have it all together. Brent Cannon
BRENT: I blame all that I have researched and written on laziness. I was a lousy typist until the computer era, when the ease of the machine turned me into a writing beast. My hat is off to all the old-style reporters who had to lug around a heavy typewriter from one race to another. They are the really committed stars.
k) Spider Razon at L&R was a great supplier to us back in the day. If I remember right, his son or maybe Grandson was learning the business so Spider could slow it down a bit. Great guy I loved working with and learning from. From Ron Funfar
RON: Maybe we can get Spider to write down some of his stories for us and I will put it in the Gone Racin’ Archives for everyone to see. In my bucket list for the next life, I hope to work with every manufacturer (for at least a few months) so I can learn about the people that made motorsports what it is today.
l) I would like to take advantage of your offer for copies of the biographies for the following three Dry Lakes and Bonneville Racers: Brissette Bros (Bob and Jim), Tom Bryant and Bill Burke. Thank you for all that you do. Miler Mike Stewart
Miler Mike: Better yet, I am sending you all the stories and biographies in the Gone Racin’ Archives. Enjoy.
m) I just wanted to endorse Gasser Wars magazine. Phil Morris is a printer, and it shows in the quality of his publications. A deep love of Drag Racing and Gassers motivated the name change from the beloved Anglia News and expansion of coverage. Advertising opportunities abound. See their displays at the March Meet and Hot Rod Reunions. Rob Frazier
ROB: I’m glad you wrote in and added your opinion to the review. Yes, it is a fine magazine.
n) “An anonymous reader wrote in that it is important to have signage directing people to where restrooms and other parts of museum, car shows, car racing and other events are.”
Anonymous: Speaking on behalf of the elderly this is an important issue. My father always stressed safety, good entertainment, clean restrooms and short lines.

On display was a restored Formula 500 and a Legend Car. The cars were well received by the organisers of the event. Lots of children had photos taken sitting in the speedcars. One young man with lots of challenges in a wheelchair came along with his lady carer and was very interested in Dave Hunt’s stock rod. Dave asked, “would you like to sit in it,” the young man smiled as Dave was opening the door of the stock rod. They got him out of his wheelchair and into Dave’s car which took a lot of time. Then Dave started up #76, and the smile of the young man’s face was priceless. The Vintage Speedcar Association Newsletter. 7) BLAST FROM THE PAST…… From the Wally & Barbara Parks story, We Did It Our Way.
The date of June 1950 is a wild stab in the dark for when the Pomona Valley Timing Association Choppers (PVTA) car club set up classes and rules for racing on the Pomona Fairgrounds parking lot. Dates on letters were often missing; car club secretaries never thought that seven decades later historians would be poking around in their old letters. They knew when they wrote and submitted their reports; but it makes the job of historian much harder. The PVTA Choppers Technical Committee turned in a great job and while these classes, rules and regulations are outdated they do show the thinking at the time and how such work resulted in the creation of drag racing as we know it today.

a) Fourth winner was the 2017 #02 Matador Motorsports Cadillac DPi co-driven by Pierce Marshall and Eric Foss in Run Group C. Although the breakout victory by Neapole and Cosmo in December stopped Marshall and Foss from sweeping 2024’s trio of HSR Classic races, the #02 team now has a solid record of three wins in the last four HSR Classic events run dating back to Watkins Glen last year. 15) WALLY’S STORIES: courtesy of DRIVE Magazine, by Wally Parks (to be serialized). INDIAN MOTORCYCLE DAY-WEST
Seeing all those ancient and restored two-wheelers took me back to a time in my youth, when I too was hooked on a motorcycle. It was an Indian – vintage early 1920s – parked under a tree in an elderly man’s backyard that I walked past daily on my way to our high school bus from Southgate to Watts. It was weathered, from long exposure to the elements, and I could see that the tires were flat. But that didn’t dampen my teen-age curiosity in the least. So one day I walked up to the door and knocked. And when the gentleman answered I asked if the motorcycle might be for sale. He replied that he would think about it and that I could drop back in a few days. I think I lost a couple of nights’ sleep, imagining what I might do if he said yes. Being in school, I had no money. But that reality didn’t interfere with my eagerness to somehow be the owner of that motorcycle!

17) BLAST FROM THE PAST…… From the Wally & Barbara Parks story, We Did It Our Way.
The emphasis on safety, the urging to get registrations into the SCTA for the 1950 Bonneville Time Trials set for August 21-27, and the professional look of the program are attributed to the Road Ramblers of San Diego and Gus Maanum, but I believe my father may have assisted in the editing process. The SCTA reserved El Mirage for time trials on May 6-7, June 10-11, July 8-9, September 23-24, October 21-22 and the last meet of the year on November 18-19, 1950. The editor published the CHP’s (Safety Education Section) article entitled “Hot Rods not Shot Rods.”
